Oisin Murphy: A Jockey at Heart, An Adventurer by
Passion
By Sharan Kumar
It was an absolute privilege to chat
with Oisin Murphy, the English champion jockey who’s already racked up four
championship titles before hitting his thirties. Seriously, what’s next? This
guy’s done it all – and in four languages to boot! Irish, English, French, and
German – if you ever need a translator who’s won races on four continents,
Oisin's your guy. A true gentleman, he gladly answered every question, despite
his superstar status which could’ve made him act too busy for it. But Oisin stayed
humble.
Of course, fame came with its challenges. Achieving
legendary status that early means you’re under the spotlight 24/7, and
Oisin found himself weighed down by the heavy expectations – leading to a few
off-track infractions. A couple of suspensions here, a few questionable
decisions there – the usual stuff when you're too busy being a global
sensation.
But here’s where it gets interesting – Oisin's not
just a jockey; he’s an adventurer. Oh yes, he’s even competed in show
jumping. Show jumping! And after a rough patch (because, you
know, being a rockstar at 25 can take its toll), he made his grand comeback in
February 2023, riding a stellar 216 winners in 2024. And let's not forget the
hurdles – yes, hurdles. No, not the metaphorical kind. Actual hurdles. If
there’s one thing Oisin Murphy knows, it’s how to jump over obstacles in both
life and sport.
And while his riding on the track might resemble poetry
in motion (so graceful, it’s almost too perfect), Oisin confesses that
he’s actually a fan of poetry in the literary sense as well. So, when you see
him zooming past the competition, remember that it's not all about horses.
It's about the soul of a poet on horseback.
As for the Indian racing experience, Oisin seemed
quite content. "Some of the jockeys here are as good as any in the
world," he declared, clearly trying not to sound like he was auditioning for
a diplomatic award. And despite racing in India occasionally feeling like a
chaotic game of bumper cars, with jockeys not always sticking to the straight
and narrow, Oisin had no complaints. "The races I rode in were pretty
straightforward," he said, which is probably the most gracious understatement
ever uttered by someone who's been through the gladiatorial combat that is
horse racing. Oisin Murphy is a man who rides high in more ways than one – both
on the track and in life.
Last year, Oisin rode for Vijay Shirke and trainer
Pesi Shroff and won the Indian 1000 Guineas and the India Oaks on Jendayi. This
year, he was here for a different set of owners and rode with aplomb on Pesi
Shroff trainee Santissimo to a facile win in the Indian 2000 Guineas. While he
delivered the goods on all the horses he was specifically invited to India,
only Santissimo let down expectations over the energy-sapping mile and half
trip of the Indian Derby.
Oisin, ever the diplomat, said, "He's a very good
horse, but I think he just didn’t stay the Derby trip. He’ll bounce back, but
let’s face it, shorter trips are probably more his thing." No hard
feelings, just poetic analysis.
Oisin Murphy’s visit to India was more than just a
showcase of his exceptional riding skills—it was a reminder of why he stands
among the world’s best. Whether gliding past rivals with effortless finesse or
taking setbacks in stride, he carries himself with a mix of talent, adventure,
and humility. From classic wins to Derby heartbreaks, he embraced every moment
with the poise of a champion. And while Santissimo may have fallen short,
Oisin’s Indian experience was anything but. With his hunger for success and a
spirit that thrives on challenges, one thing is certain—wherever there’s a
racetrack, Oisin Murphy will always be a force to reckon with.
