Arrived Delivers, Pushing Jodha Firmly into the Limelight

Adhirajsingh Jodha’s rise is beginning to look less like promise and more like permanence. Fresh from Guineas glory, the emerging trainer struck again on Indian racing’s grandest eastern stage by landing the Gr 1 Calcutta Derby, underlining that big races are fast becoming a habit rather than an exception. No longer knocking on the door of big-time racing, Jodha has stepped in and begun rearranging the furniture. After the Indian 2000 Guineas with Baychimo, he followed it up with the Ramnarain Ruia Trophy on Saturday, moving steadily closer to the summit every Indian trainer secretly bookmarks: the Indian Derby. For Jodha and a buoyant band of owners, this was not just another win, but a shared dream gathering serious momentum.

 

As if one marquee success was too modest a statement, Jodha went a step further by capturing the Gr 1 Calcutta Derby Stakes with Arrived, the crown jewel of the Kolkata racing season. This was not just another win. Under a determined and no-nonsense ride from Anthony Raj, Arrived dug deep to hold off a spirited challenge from Pesi Shroff’s Superstar, turning the straight into a private duel while the rest watched the main act from far.

 

The race had been billed as competitive. But once the tempo rose and nerves were tested, it became clear that this was a two-horse argument conducted at full gallop. Arrived, the favourite, was entitled to win and did exactly that, though not without being made to earn every inch. Superstar, who had earlier treated starting gates with suspicion, behaved impeccably after an encouraging mock race and ran far above expectations. Smartly away, prominently placed, and resolute to the line, he threatened to spoil the party but fell short by a neck.

 

Arrived, by Deauville out of Transformation, proved his stamina credentials over the testing mile and a half, while Superstar, by Leitir Mor, showed that sprint-bred reputations can occasionally be revised with evidence. Gold Empire, anchored at the back and clearly reading a different race script, finished strongly under Hindu Singh to grab third, a length behind Superstar, leaving connections wondering what might have been had the timing been kinder.

 

Much was made beforehand of jockey choices. Suraj Narredu opted for Star Studded, trusting instinct over arithmetic. In hindsight, instinct asked for a recount. Star Studded failed to quicken when it mattered, while Gold Empire’s late surge suggested that a different set of hands and decisions might have altered the final photograph. Still, racing has always been generous with post-mortems and notoriously stingy with second chances. Suraj will survive the debate, as countless jockeys before him have, and countless after him will.

 

Up front, Elenora ensured an honest gallop. Anthony Raj settled Arrived perfectly, shadowed by Superstar under A Prakash, who handled the pressure of a big-stage ride with commendable composure. When the field turned for home, Arrived was asked to go and Superstar accepted the invitation with enthusiasm. They battled stride for stride, nostrils flaring, reputations on the line, until perseverance and positioning made the final difference. Gold Empire closed late, fast, and wide, arriving just in time to regret being switched off for so long.

 

Beyond the form book, this victory carried a deeper resonance. Arrived is owned by an enthusiastic consortium led by breeder Ameeta Mehra, along with a long list of partners who did not just buy into a horse but into a shared dream. Wins like this validate patience, faith, and the quiet optimism that fuels ownership syndicates. For Jodha, it was another rung climbed with purpose, proof that his rise is not a seasonal flourish but a sustained ascent.

 

The Royal Calcutta Turf Club, meanwhile, deserves credit for staging a full nine-race card despite a packed festive schedule that would have tested the stamina of even the hardiest administrator. The healthy crowd was a welcome sight in times when empty stands are becoming an uncomfortable norm elsewhere. On a day when a young trainer announced himself, owners celebrated together, and the sport remembered how compelling it can be, Kolkata racing played its part with style.

Rajan Bala, one of a rare kind

One of the finest cricketer writers that India has seen, Rajan Bala, passed away in Bangalore on Friday (October 9) after brief illness. He was truly an inspirational journalist for a generation of sports writers in the country in a career spanning about four decades.
