Bourbon Bay slams opposition

Ganapathy trained Bourbon Bay who had been running fair races in good company, bounced back to winning form in the six furlong Police Cup, a race for horses rated 40 to 65, the main event of races held on Saturday. Bourbon Bay who had finished sixth in the Poonawalla Million, lived up to expectations with a powerful run in the final furlong to win as he pleased.

Angelfire who had recorded an impressive on debut was the favourite though the filly steadily supporters in the ring possibly due to the fact that a setback had kept her out of action from running a second time during the winter season and that her recovery may not have been adequate to make a winning come back. Bourbon Bay also did not have many takers due to the fact that the stable has not been in the limelight of late and the usual thrust that is there on the fancied runners of this establishment was not there. Nox who has a wind problem was the one who commanded most attention after Angelfire.

Greens, Nox and Angelfire went at a good clip in the front which was also their undoing on a going which made severe demands on fitness. The track which had received good amount of rain in the last few days, was not conducive for such efforts as the going was ``dead’’ to use racing parlance. Angelfire led briefly when the race was coming on the boil but Bourbon Bay who was pulled out from the rails and given a free run in the middle of the course, responded brilliantly and pulled away from the rest. Easy was a surprise second ahead of Scubarioo.

Trainer Puttanna was in the limelight after a very long break, saddling a hat-trick of winners. Kripa was the best supported among the lot, backed to the exclusion of the rest in the Lady Gibraltar Plate (Div I). The fitness of Kripa helped him to overhaul the front runners and then stay put in front. Sunny Connexion moved from behind to take the runner up ahead of another unfancied Fly For Sure.

Puttanna’s Talisker who had run fair races during the winter races was the second favourite as Lush Lashes cornered all the support. In the event, Talisker proved too good for the opposition, kicking clear of the rest inside the distance post to win by a widening margin from first timer Reaping Reward who should profit from this forward run. Lush Lashes put up a disappointing show. Trainer Prasanna Kumar’s Spark of Reverence continued the good run of the stable when he won the Lady Gibraltar Plate (Div II) with a start to finish mission. There was inspired betting on Sun Classique who however found the winner too speedy for comfort.

Puttanna’s other winner came through lesser fancied Immortal who was playing hide and seek with the punters all these days. Immortal showed up on the wide outside and was inclined to give a positive account of himself, winning at the expense of front-running Your Destiny Favourite Glory Bound was not well placed at any stage of the race but was seen putting in good work when the cause was lost.

The Last Samurai cornered all the betting in the 1600 metres Dupont Plate but close to race time, last outing winner Conceptual came in for solid support. The Last Samurai surged into the lead inside the final furlong but apprentice jockey Parmar failed to keep the favourite going even as Conceptual fought back along the rails to regain the lead and the race.

Race goers was left a confused lot as Give Me The Money started as a favourite but soon was replaced by stablemate Yamaguchi as the favourite. The doosra did not work as top-weighted Sheer Gold pulled it off, going into decisive lead in the final furlong and lasting out when Act of Duty came with a strong run. Both Give Me The Money and Yamaguchi were sluggish at the start though the latter found a place on the frame in the end.
