A tricky but competitive card

It is difficult to be aggressive while selecting the fancies for Saturday’s Bangalore races. Aboline is no doubt a good type of a horse, having shown precocious speed, appears deceptively as a good bet. Aboline has shown speed and has swept the opposition of their feet. But then when it comes to the second season, the horses tend to show greater physical maturity and as a result, the equation changes. As such, Aboline, despite enjoying an edge, has his task cut out as Classerville is no mean performer. If Aboline beats Classerville at this handicap disadvantage, then there is no stopping this son of Burden of Proof in the Colts Classics.

The card for the day appears tricky but at a cursory glance, the horses which one can back with some measure of confidence are Social Climber, Classerville and Sugar Ray. The last named may be stable’s second choice but for me he looks like a horse with better class.

The enduring charm of the Bangalore Derby

I never thought that I would become a full-time racing writer when I set out as a journalist in the year 1980. My passion for cricket was what drove me to become a sports journalist. If there are many converts like me in the field of horse racing, you can blame it on the enduring charm of the Derby. Most people come to the Derby because they hear so much about it. French jockey suspended after defeat of favourite

Visiting French jockey Stephen Breaux was suspended from riding in races pending enquiry following the defeat of favourite Sparkling Spirit in the second race of Pune races on Sunday. Favourite Sparkling Spirit lost in questionable circumstances but the decision to suspend the jockey came about after the Stewards ordered an enquiry into the possible interference caused by eventual winner Mariposa to the favourite. The character of the enquiry changed dramatically after Narendra Lagad, who trains Sparkling Spirit, appeared before the Stewards to inform that he suspected that Stephane had not done justice to his mount. The 23-year-old jockey from France who is on his first visit to India has ridden 150 odd winners in France, USA & UK, and was riding three-year old filly Sparkling Spirit who was quoted at cramped odds.
