Cielo Rey strikes rousing form

Hyped as one of the best among his contemporaries stationed in Bangalore after an impressive debut win last winter, Cielo Rey had fallen from esteem for reasons best known to his connections. The progeny of Burden of Proof appeared to have immensely profited from the long absence from the track as he smashed the field in the 1400 metres Ashoka Chakra Cup, a terms race for three year olds, which highlighted the races on Friday. The runaway win certainly would have been a cause for regret for the connections of only because of the possible winning opportunities in classic races if the Kunigal Stud Farm produce had maintained the form that he showed in his debut win. Trainer S Attaollahi has done a fine job of resurrecting the horse from nadir. The trainer led in two well backed horses through Cielo Rey and Silken Thomas who won the twin attractions of the day.

The Ashoka Chakra Cup which always attracts quality field had this time around horses which had fallen from esteem after exciting starts to their career. Cielo Rey, Angelfire, Six Shooter and Glitterato belonged to this category. Glitterato was backed quite spiritedly while the odds on Cielo Rey drifted out dramatically as his mock race too was not indicative of a quick reversal in his performance capabilities.

Jockey Chris Hayes took Cielo Rey on a start to finish mission with the rest of the runners closely bunched up behind. Cielo Rey got stronger after bringing the field into view and then sped away from his nearest pursuer Angelfire to record an impressive win in a smart time of one minute 24.85 seconds which is above par for a horse competing at this level. Glitterato was clearly outclassed as he plodded home to finish a tame third.

Silken Thomas had the benefit of good outing in his previous essay and as such, the spirited support for him in the Saptharishi Cup (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 65, was certainly not misplaced. Chris Hayes had Silken Thomas on a tight leash in about the fourth or fifth position as Marcegalia set the pace for the seven furlong trip. Affirmed Crown was in a handy third position and shaped to collar the front runner inside the final 300 metres but Silken Thomas overhauled his challenger with ease to record a facile win. Stylish Bay ran on to finish third. Dante’s Peak stumbled at around 800 metres maker possibility due to the undulations of the track or because he clipped Inspiring Trust but jockey David Allan managed to stay in the saddle despite a big scare as a result of the horse losing its footing. Suraj Narredu’s clever tactical riding enabled Hill of Grace to edge out So Much More in the lower division of the race. Suraj had Hill of Grace move up smoothly to come alongside So Much More at the final bend and cramp the favourite for room before kicking clear. The lead established by Hill of Grace stood the filly in good stead as So Much More finished strongly but fell short narrowly.

Suraj had earlier outwitted Srinath on favourite Superb Style who got the measure of the front running Spark of Solitaire in the closing moments of the race. Perhaps Srinath who went on a start to finish mission on Spark of Solitaire hastened a bit on turning for home which saw the front runner tire out in the dying moments of the race Superb Style caught up with the front runner in the final strides of the race. Bucephalas who was outpaced in the beginning and graced the rear end, finished powerfully to finish third ahead of Chintz. Dramatic Dancer won the lower division of the race quite easily at nourishing odds from favourite Kingdomofdreams. Special Charm showed some interest in the race to finish third. Brunetta was surprisingly off color.

Jockey Amyn Merchant had a good double through The Dawn and Seasons Greetings. The Dawn, who had run a forward race, trounced the opposition in the day’s opener. After tracking All Rise into the straight, The Dawn left the field standing to record a facile win over Cash Is King and I Fancy You. Merchant completed a double by winning the concluding race of the day through Seasons Greetings who held off a stiff challenge by Good Companion and Born Beauty. Favourite Dark Horse was not sighted.

Jockey Prakash’s lack of finishing thrust on favourite First of a Legend ensured the defeat of favourite by a narrow margin over Super Spear.
