Srinath corners limelight with four winners

Jockey Srinath was in the limelight, booting home four winners, including Systematic in the day’s feature event on Friday. Trainer M P Mahaesh saddled a brace of winners through Systematic and Senator who both recorded an encore with impressive and improved performances. The three-year old filly Systematic won her lead up race for the Oaks over a nine furlong trip with ease and considering the fact that most other top fillies would have made a beeline to Mumbai for the Indian classics, the progeny of Steinbeck now progresses as a front liner contender for the fillies Derby.

After three impressive seconds against top horses, Systematic edged out Arabian Dancer early in the season to come out of the maidens’ ranks. Now campaigned over an extended trip of nine furlongs, Systematic was a firm ante post favourite but lost supporters close to race time resulting in an alarming drift in the odds. Those who continued to repose faith in this small made but talented filly reached rich rewards as Systematic gave no anxious moments to her followers. Moon Memories who was widely expected to build on her two wins in succession was out of depth in this field.

Jockey Srinath kept Systematic a handy second behind Alluring as the field set out for the nine furlong trip. Shades of White along the rails and Leave It To Me on her outside raced in close proximity. Systematic took charge of the proceedings on turning for home and the Mahaesh trainee quickened nicely to establish a winning lead over the rest. Lush Lashes closed in with a flourish to take the second spot ahead of Leave It To Me who nosed out Shades of White for the third berth. Moon Memories faded out after being prominent till the final furlong.

Mahaesh’s other ward The Senator showed amazing improved when leaving the field stranded in the 1400 metres Bug Bunny Trophy (Div I). Srinath took The Senator on a start to finish mission chased by Gurujosh and kept increasing the lead to check a distance clear of his pursuer. The Senator too has made vast improvement and he can be placed to win again.

Srinath started the day guiding the lesser fancied Cindy Girl to a runaway win over Leading Lady in the day’s opener. Leading Lady was backed to the exclusion of the rest but in the race itself, she failed to sustain her effort in the front as Cindy Girl easily overhauled her and went away for a smashing win. Srinath rounded off the day’s proceedings with yet another win on trainer Warren Singh’s Another Destiny who after a forward run last time out, ran true to his merit by trouncing the opposition. The well bred Greens who was expected to pose a hurdle or two, was rusty for having been in cold storage and was a well beaten second.

Irfan Ghatala trained Advantage Logan was backed down spiritedly and the progeny of Juniper got up in time to overhaul the front running Calypso Star in the shadow of the winning post to oblige a big expectation. Tuthmoss was widely perceived to be a big threat to the fancied runner but he ran tamely.

Music Forever was the firm favourite to win the Pootannah Memorial Plate (Div I) and the Dominic ward was guided to a comfortable win by David Allan. After being held up in the fourth position, Music Forever steadily improved places in the straight and then swept away from the rest with a furlong out. Connavaro made a late rally but only finished second best while Fanaa ran on from behind to finish third.

With Man Down Under withdrawn from the fray, the Bugs Bunny Trophy (Div II) had an open look about it and it was in the fitness of things that Prashastha who came in for spirited support close to race time, overwhelmed a modest lot of horses to enable his trainer Prithviraj to open his account. Rank outsider Bonzini was a surprise second.
