Mighty Heart springs a big surprise

Neil Darashah trained Mighty Heart brought off the biggest upset of Saturday’s races when he won the Kanteerava Cup, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the main event of the day. Mighty Heart who had gone winless for a considerable period of time, won against the run of expectations by having the measure of Lowndes Square and Advantage Logan. Favourite Captivating, who was once a rousing performer, was surprisingly off color and ran out of steam at the final bend and finished dismally.

Captivating had such imposing credentials that she was backed spiritedly despite a longish break form racing. She was last seen in action at Delhi where she had finished behind Sprint Star in the North India Derby. It is possible that Captivating who was injured during her sojourn at Delhi lacked the fitness to run against horses which were fitter in comparison.

Jockey Prakash took Captivating on a start to finish mission. The daughter of Burden of Proof sent distress signals after straightening for the homestretch and was overhauled by Mighty Heart who was racing in her shadow. Mighty Heart broke clear and held off the bid of Lowndes Square who had to circle round the field and travel wide into the straight. Advantage Logan, who is in good shape this season, occupied the third spot. Captivating disappeared from view in the final furlong.

Jaggy Dhariwal’s wards won both the divisions of the March Plate, a race for maiden three year olds, which were contested by horses which are not going to go far in their career. Jaldi showed good improvement after a forward effort in her last start and trounced the opposition to win fine fashion from favourite Sky Glider whose significant drift in odds was an indicator of the shape of things to come. Jockey Suraj Narredu, who had Jaldi dictating terms from the start, had an arm chair ride to victory. However, he had to earn the win on Portatone in the lower division of the race. After a sluggish beginning, Portatone improved quickly rounding the final bend and had the measure of front running Liberty Ship. Jockey Gaurav Sapra rode a poor race on favourite Never Say Goodbye who was held up in the rails for a considerable distance in the straight. By the time the jockey could pull the favourite on the wide outside, Portatone had reached the safety of the winning post. The finishing burst of the favourite suggested of great possibilities for the runner up.

Cash Is King lived up to his name in the 1400 metres Devarayanadurga Plate., a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Cash Is King attracted huge volumes of betting in the ring and true to market predictions, Cash Is King managed to keep the well backed Man Down Under quite comfortably.

The Bagalkote Plate (Div I) saw Seasons Greetings being backed down spiritedly but in this instance, cash did not prove king as the favourite finished a dismal last. Stablemate of the favourite, Western Palace flew home in the end to nail Neel Gagan and Thumping Victory to record a narrow win. Flip Your Destiny who was placed in poor company, had no problems in winning the lower division of the race at the expense of Gampu. Black Splendour who had her share of supporters packed up without a trace and reportedly came back lame.

Immense was considered a certainty in the Glass House Trophy but the favourite made heavy weather of the task by taking his own time to quicken along the rails. Jockey John was able to get the better of front running Dim Sum only in the shadow of the post. Gift of Love finished on strongly to edge out Dim Sum from the runner up berth.

Moon Memories was backed by the people in the know in the Virajpet Plate despite the drift in odds. Lush Lashes who had lost narrowly last time was the firm favourite. Moon Memories lost significant ground at the start but jockey Rajendra did not lose his cool and gradually worked his way up and snatched the lead form Glitterato close home and win from late rallying Lush Lashes. Spark of Reverence finished from way off the pace to go past the post locked with Glitterato resulting in a dead heat for the third place.

Unique Star came in for sustained support in the 1200 metres Makedatu Plate which looked like a minefield. However, Unique Star proved a notch better than the rest when checking in well clear of Star League and Gara Fluid. Most runners in this race were out for an airing.
