Palazzio’s Sun lifts Sprinters Cup in splendid fashion

The Capt Jamshed J Appo owned Palazzio`s Sun[profile] ended the frustrating wait of his owner to win the coveted Gr 1 Vandrevala Foundation Sprinters Cup by slamming the opposition in splendid fashion on Saturday. English jockey Martin Dwyer rode a peach of a race while guiding the Padmanabhan trainee to thwart the challenge of favourite Forest Flair[profile] who was widely expected to emerge as the fastest horse in the country.Incidentally, Palazzio, the dam of Palazzio`s Sun had the mortification of losing this race narrowly in two successive years and the victory of Palazzio`s Sun was a just reward for the versatile race horse who has proved her worth as a broodmare. Captain Jamsshed Appoo had missed winning this race on four occasions, as apart from Palazzio, Lady One and Palazzio`s Sun had come close to winning this prestigious race. The great Oasis Star had won this event for the last two years. The gusty six-year old mare unfortunately died on Friday at Dubai after suffering a heart attack following her third start during the Dubai Racing Carnival.
Palazzio`s Sun hadn`t raced since running second to Oasis Star in the last Sprinters Cup at Hyderabad on October 25 as he had suffered a setback in training. It was indeed a training feat on the part of trainer Padmanabhan who nursed this horse to be spot on for this race with the help of a mock race at Bangalore a fortnight ago. Karthik Ganapathy trained Forest Flair had done everything right leading to this race, winning the Dr S C Jain Sprinters Cup in fine fashion. Forest Flair was strongly backed to win while there was considerable support for Sea Ruler. There were a few hard core supporters for Palazzio`s Sun who expected the son of Alnasr Alwasheek to overcome all the handicaps imposed by his long absence from the race track.Palazzio`s Sun who had the innermost draw, had enough speed to take charge of the proceedings with Ekabinskya for company followed by Forest Flair, Portrush, Ikaria, D`Artagnan, Sea Ruler and the rest in close proximity. Martin Dwyer dictated the pace cleverly, slowed down the race midway and then when the field closed in with a rush, had Palazzio`s Sun quicken all over again. Though Palazzio`s Sun drifted out slightly under pressure, he was so much in control of the situation that he won by a shade over two lengths from Forest Flair who just about nosed out D`Artagnan and Ikaria for the second spot. There was a cluster finish behind Palazzio`s Sun with less than two lengths separating the rest of the runners. Palazzio`s Sun clocked 1 min 10.37 seconds.Jockey Martin Dwyer said that the race went exactly the way it had been visualized by the trainer. ``I had everything under control from the word `go`. It is a tribute to the trainer that he had Palazzio`s Sun in top condition despite missing race action for a considerable period of time,`` he said. The horse with the best credentials Maseeha[profile], from trainer Uttam Singh`s stables, won the Gr 1 Vandrevala Foundation Stayers Cup, over a grueling trip of 3000 metres. Maseeha who was a seasoned performer on the local circuit, won as expected by the majority, outstaying the rest. Jockey Silvester De Sousa kept Maseeha a handy second behind the front running Cavardosi and sent his horse sailing clear on turning for home to win with a measure of comfort from Bangalore challengers Conceptual[profile] and Spark of Gold. The Bangalore challengers were handicapped by the absence of a lead up race as the traditional Stayers Trial Stake had gone void and this perhaps affected their performance.
