String Along necks out Couleur Rouge at the post

Dr M A M Ramaswamy’s sweep of Mysore 1000 Guineas continues unabated. For the fifth time in a row, a horse owned by the Turf Baron came good as String Along got stronger close home to neck out the front running Couleur Rouge in the closing strides of the race to win the first classic of the season. For trainer Ganapathy who has been running a lean patch, this was the third consecutive win in this premier event which is being run as Karnataka Racehorse Owners’ Association Mysore 1000 Guineas for the last four years. String Along built on the impressive win earlier in the season to win the race close home with fancied Balmoral Castle finishing a tame third. Aprillia, who was strongly favored to win, did not show spark at any stage and the question whether the mile long trip was too long for her comfort is something that cannot be emphatically answered as she was well beaten even before the runners traversed the final furlong.

To achieve a landmark is the high point of a sportsman’s career. Even as the sportsman is approaching the landmark, he faces several hurdles before he crosses it. And after crossing the milestone, he is confronted with problems of a different kind and he needs to reinvent himself and start fresh all over again. Jockey Suraj Narredu became the youngest jockey to achieve the distinction recently but things have not gone well for him from then onwards. His appeal against 30 day suspension for rude behavior in the Stewards room was pending for a long time and even as he was celebrating achieving a personal milestone, came the biggest blow of his career. His appeal was not only rejected by the Appeal Board which also increased his suspension by another 15 days. He is also facing an enquiry pertaining to his ride on Aztec Gold. Surely the youngster is under immense pressure but he can overcome all these problems by showing strength of will and the temperament of a champion. But unfortunately, the troubles seem to have their toll as once again he failed to live up to expectation on Balmoral Castle, not following the instruction to ride the fancied runner in front. In a slow run race, he placed Balmoral Castle in a disadvantageous position by making the filly cover too much ground in the final furlong. He was also imbalanced on the horse in the final furlong.

Aprillia and Balmoral Castle were the joint favourites, with String Along who had recorded a smashing win earlier in the season, also coming in for strong support. Couleur Rouge was taken on a start to finish mission by jockey Ryan Marshall, with String Along in close attendance followed by Aprillia and the pair of Balmoral Castle and Con Artiste. Suraj Narredu strangely chose to bide for his time till the horses took the final bend. On the last occasion that Balmoral Castle had won over a mile, she raced just behind pace-setter and then burst clear at the top of the straight.

Rounding the final turn, Couleur Rouge kicked on gamely with String Along taking time to overhaul the front runner. A strong finishing effort by jockey Imran Khan ensured that String Along put her neck in front at the finish. Balmoral Castle covered some leeway to be two lengths adrift while Aprillia put up a disappointing effort. Con Artiste went wide at the final bend and was a beaten cause well before the runners approached the final two furlongs. The winner clocked a modest time of one minute 39.75 seconds.
