Khushroo buys two yearlings to race in England

Mr. Khushroo Dhunjibhoy, racing administrator, leading race horse owner and owner of the high profile Nanoli Stud Farm has been expanding the scale of racing operations in recent times. The success of Jacqueline (King Charlemagne) who won a record breaking four successive Indian classics including the Gr 1 McDowell Indian Derby has obviously been the high point of his career as a race horse owner. This success perhaps has spurred him to explore newer avenues. He already owns a few horses and one of his two-year olds Jehanbux (owned by the same team as Jacqueline) won a race in England in August. The two-year old colt is by Giant’s Causeway out of Harlan Honey (Silver Hawk) who won a race in England in August. The horse is under the care of Richard Hannon and was ridden to victory by Richard Hughes.

``Indians may well be racing more horses abroad’’ Mr. Dhunjibhoy had quipped after returning from Arqana sales in August where the prices had dropped significantly, way below the price that is tagged on to Indian bred horses which are procured from abroad through pregnant mares. Dr Vijay Mallya has always been racing abroad and his much hyped Admiralofthefleet was expected to win a bagful of races but unfortunately he broke down during the Dubai Racing Carnival a few years ago. Admiralofthefleet (Danehill) is due to arrive at Kunigal Stud Farm shortly to stand as a stallion. Recently another leading owner Haresh Mehta had a Listed race success in Ireland through Fourpenny Lane who won the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fairy Bridge Stakes (Listed) at Tipperary in August. The Joanna Morgan trained Fourpenny Lane is in foal to Verglas and is due to arrive at Sohna Stud Farm.

Last week, Khushroo Dhunjibhoy bought two yearlings, one at Tattersall and another one at the traditional favourite buying spot of Indian breeders, namely Goff’s. A chestnut filly by Teofilo ex Arctic Hunt (Bering) was bought for 80,000 Euros at Goffs Orby Sale. She is from the first crop of Teofilo, a son of Galileo who was an unbeaten Champion two Year old who won the Gr.1 Dewhurst and Gr.1 National Stakes. His yearlings have averaged over 120,000 Euros at all the major sales in Europe so far. He stands at Kildangan Stud in Ireland under the Darley Stud banner.

The other purchase was a bay filly by Montjeu ex Delauncy (Machiavellian) and she was bought for 100,000 Sterling Pounds at Tattersall Book 1, October 2010. She is by champion racehorse and leading sire Montjeu. The bay filly is a half-sister to black type performers Delasarte and Veenwouden. This is also the family of the good sprinters Patavellian and Avonbridge both of whom won the Gr.1 Prix de l'abbaye. Montjeu stands at Coolmore in Ireland.

The trainers for both the fillies are yet to be decided but they will in all likelihood be trained in England.

When asked whether the Jacqueline team will also own these two fillies, ``hopefully so’’, Dhunjibhoy quipped. ``More and more people are wanting to be partners with us,’’ he added.

Mr. Dhunjibhoy also said that he plans to buy a substantial number of pregnant mares during the breeding stock sale at Goff’s and Tattersall.
