Ocean And Beyond best for Nanoli Stud Pune Derby

The Shiraz Sunderji trained Ocean And Beyond (Kingsalsa/Sayuri (Saddler's Wells) three-year old gelding goes into the Nanoli Stud Pune Derby with impeccable credentials. The got abroad Ocean And Beyond was beaten close home by Eloise when he was conceding weight in his only outing during the ongoing Pune season. Ocean And Beyond had also finished second in the Gr 1 Poonawalla Breeders’ Multi-Million at Mumbai. Since his last run, Ocean And Beyond has shown tremendous improvement as evidenced by his workouts which are outstanding to say the least.

Another factor which will enhance the credentials of Ocean And Beyond is the fact that he is out and out bred to stay. Though he appears one paced, over the trip of 2000 metres, he can test his challengers to the hilt with some with aggressive running in front. It is not that he is required to hit the front from the start but he needs to stay in touch with the pace setters and then outstay the rest. He does not have a great turn of foot but has the ability to outlast the others when the race becomes a test of stamina. He carries lot of class and he appears to be spot on for this big event. He should in all probability provide his owners Rakesh Kumar Wadhawan and Prem Tharani, their second Derby. Moonlight Romance had won the Kingfisher Derby in July at Bangalore.

The Derby has a number of contenders who are yet to herald their arrival on the big scene. Eloise, who is a final entry in this race, has been on the upgrade. She summered well at Bangalore where she recorded a smashing win over seven furlongs. Since returning to Pune, she beat Derby’s hot favourite Ocean And Beyond albeit in receipt of weight from the worthy adversary. Trainer Pesi Shroff has great faith in the abilities of this daughter of Glory of Dancer. Interestingly, the progeny of Glory of Dancer are yet to make a mark in this Derby though they have won two back to back Indian Derbys on the dusty track of Mahalaxmi.

Star Warrior has not really lived up to expectation of his early win. But one cannot take his chances lightly because he has the requisite bloodline for a race of this nature. He is being ridden by jockey Malesh Narredu who is at the fag end of his career. Malesh Narredu has a good record in this Derby having won more number of Pune Derbys than any other Indian jockey.

Vinayak trained Berlusconi has shown that he is cut out for the Derby trip. He won twice, the first time against the run of expectations over a shorter trip. Then in the lead up to this race, he recorded an impressive win. This full brother to last year’s Derby runner up Cabriolet is rated highly but then he is being thrown at the deep end. If he does well, he can be assured of a bagful of wins.

Hyderabad Fillies Trial Stakes winner Scionic is another who is expected to be in the thick of action. This daughter of Diffident showed amazing improvement when winning the race at Hyderabad. Her young trainer Altamash has great hopes on the filly and she is being ridden by current leading jockey Dashrath Singh who seems to be doing nothing wrong at the moment.

The Manjri Stud Farm bred Light My Way won his lead up race over the Derby trip in impressive fashion. Whether he can straightaway make a mark in the company of more accomplished performers remains to be seen. Su Chaliyao who won a terms race in the Stewards room, is another optimistic contender in the race.

At this point of time, it is difficult to look beyond the ocean!
