Aprillia takes a quantum jump

Dr and Mrs. Vijay Mallya owned Aprillia took a quantum jump when she held off the challenge of seasoned performers en route to victory in the 1200 metres Rajyotsava Cup, a terms race for three-year olds and over, the main event of Friday’s races. Aboline began as a favourite but the odds drift was a clear indication of the shape of things to come but one had not bargained for last year’s Derby winner to finish down the field. But then that has been the story of Aboline and jockey Christopher Alford. Both are known for their inconsistency.

The bookies perhaps had made an error when they quoted Aboline as a firm favourite in the ante post odds. They were quick to realize that something was amiss as they kept expanding the odds and by the time the runners were stalled, Aboline had faded away from public’s eye so much so that the poor show of Aboline did not come as a surprise. Aprillia was nursed from the outside draw to take over the running by Zervan from Magnanimity and the progeny of Burden of Proof set a decent pace. Aprillia skipped away from the field at the top of the straight to open up an unassailable lead. The late dash of Atlantus only helped to bridge the leeway. Nessie finished an impressive third ahead of Incredible and Love Conquers All. The higher rated horses in the fray like Aboline, Tomsk and Magnanimity were not sighted at the busy end. Nessie is sure to incur a stiff penalty for this effort. Love Conquers All who finished fifth from the rear position, is the one for the note book. It is difficult to read the form of the race though Aprillia won as a fancied runner, the performance of the ones expected to figure at the finish, was too poor for comfort. Couleur Rouge, who had lost the Mysore 1000 Guineas to String Along in the final strides of the race, ran a dismal last, finishing just ahead of Aboline.

Astounding Gallop was widely expected to win the mile long Kolar Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65, with ease but the favourite was demolished by the finishing burst of the Dashmesh Stud Farm bred One Life To Love to who recorded a very impressive win, from way off the pace. Astounding Gallop’s run in the Mysore 2000 Guineas was eye-catching and as such, he was backed to the exclusion of the rest. Crown Vision set the pace with Skyliner in close attendance while Astounding Gallop was held back in the fourth position. One Life To Love raced in the penultimate position. Rounding the final bend, Astounding Gallop was pushed by jockey John to go past Crown Vision but his supremacy was short lived as One Life To Love came up with a big run to collar the favourite with ease to win going away. While most winners during the day were struggling past the winning post, One Life To Love was getting better at the finish. One Life To Love provided jockey Suraj Narredu his third winner of the day, the other two winners having earlier come through Hi Life and Alexander Helios. Crown Vision ran on to finish third. Icebound lost a distance at the start.

S Attaollahi trained Six Shooter was widely expected to win the Kunigal Trophy (Div I). Somehow the trainer has not been lucky with his favourites. It was so with Six Shooter who dropped back from a forward position early on and was never in the hunt. Alpha Baby was briefly in front with a furlong out but was displaced by Dramatic Dance who however failed to sustain his foray at the helm. The winner was Bucephalas who covered acres of ground from way behind to emerge an easy winner. Chronicle also finished on strongly from the rear to finish third. The lower division of the race was won by Lads Gladiator in identical fashion, getting the better of Tanzanite close home. Without any apparent effort, Still Will finished third while the heavily backed Superb Style let down his supporters badly.

Favourite Alexander Helios had to wage a stiff battle before kicking clear in the hands of jockey Suraj Narredu in the Dandeli Plate (Div I). Liberty Ship essayed a strong challenge to the odds on favourite but the Darius Byramji ward had enough reserves to pull away. Jockey Imran Khan on the runner up also lost his whip. Sundance Kid came from the rear to finish an impressive third. The lower division of the race was also won by another Darius Byramji ward Gluteus Maximus who was engaged in a brief tussle for supremacy by Tiorucci. Sugriv moved leisurely to finish third and the lackadaisical approach of jockey Harsh earned him two month suspension.

High Life and Gunpowder were both backed spiritedly by their respective supporters. Smart Exotic attempted runaway tactics but the effort told on the front runner as he packed up at the final turn. Hi Life, who was handily placed, smoothly went into the lead and won with a measure of comfort. Gunpowder failed to quicken and faded out to give way to Chevvy to occupy the runner up berth.

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Anna who had found the winning post eluding her twice, finally made it in the Inauguration Plate, a five and furlong race for maiden three-year old, by getting up in time to get the measure of front running Adonis in the shadow of the post. Accurate was a long way third.
