Magisterial scrapes home in feature

Trainer Ganapathy’s classic hope Magisterial barely managed to scrape through in the mile long Hemavathi Cup, a race for horses rated 60 to 85, one of the highlights of races held on Saturday. Magisterial looked far from ready as he struggled to stave off the challenge of a poorly ridden Sweet Caroline en roué to his success as a cramped on money favourite. Lady Duff won the day’s feature on a day when Kunigal Stud Farm stallions had a role in four of the seven races programmed for the day.

Magisterial was touted as a horse of great classic potential as he recorded two back to back wins during the summer season. Magisterial looked far from ready in a mock race last week. He went into the race as cramped on money favourite on the basis of the hype that he carried though he is troubled by a few problems to his leg. One is not sure exactly what the problem is but it is difficult to visualize him winning classics after this performance. Though jockey Imran Khan did not give him a good ride, not allowing him to run freely and fell back to the rear of the field, the fact that he had to be fully ridden out to win from Sweet Caroline tells its own tale. Apprentice jockey M Kumar was perhaps overawed at the possibility of upsetting the favourite as he failed to keep Sweet Caroline on a straight course and failed to guide the horse to victory which could have been achieved with a better ride even given the fact that he is a four kg claimer.

Though Lady Duff had done nothing of note during her three runs during the summer season, the fact that she had run with better quality horses was a big advantage in her favour. A reproduction of her last effort was enough to fetch her victory in this race where Tanzanite who has let down scores of times, went in as a favourite. The speedy contender from Mysore, Miss Ruby set a fast pace followed by Lady Duff while the others were spaced out behind. Though Tanzanite moved briskly from behind to be in striking position at the top of the straight, he had a hopeless task as Lady Duff proved too speedy. Apprentice jockey Rajesh who is enjoying a good season, had Lady Duff get the measure of the front runner with a furlong out and quickened nicely to seal the race. Tanzanite ran on to finish second ahead of Spark of Bronte.
Pradeep Annaiah’s Glory to Dancer had run a brilliant mock race where he had left dual classic winner Immense stranded. He also had imposing racing credentials as he had run behind Incredible in his first start in summer. He went into the 1200 metres Belgaum Plate as a favourite though the odds kept on expanding from the initial half money quote. Though he ran prominently till the final 300 metres, he failed to display the spark expected of him and lost tamely. One could not fathom why he had run so poorly. Joriki who came in for spirited support, justified the last minute rush of money, by coming home with a big run to get the measure of Modern Art who had slipped into the lead by getting a dream run along the rails. Sweet Timer ran on to finish third.

A big gamble was brought off on Irfan Ghatala’s Sun Absolute. The progeny of Iktiyar appeared to be a better class horse than the one he was running against. He proved overwhelmingly superior despite a poor ride by jockey Selvaraj who ran into one problem or the other and had to sit still inside the final 300 metres. The well backed Windsor Square had surged into a useful by the time Selvaraj could pull Sun Absolute out but the latter proved to be too good for the field as she romped home in great style. Sun Absolute should repeat based on this performance.

Adonis had all the credentials to win the 1100 metres Melkote Plate, a race for maiden three year olds but the rush of money on Lad Fury saw his odds expanding. In the event, Adonis was driven out to victory by jockey Silvester De Sousa to hold off the challenge of Lad Fury who with a better quality ride could have posed serious problems for the eventual winner. Secretary General ran a good forward race to be a suggestive third.

There was a flood of money on Wild Nexus in the 1200 metres Kokkarebellur Plate. Wild Nexus chased the front running Crown Vision and essayed a strong challenge in the straight. However, the M P Mahaesh trainee ran on resolutely to win by half a length in the hands of apprentice jockey R Pradeep who was thus recording his career’s first win. Valahak came up with a late rally to finish an eye-catching third. His turn should come sooner than later.

Visiting jockey V R De Sousa drove out Trillion Win to a fine win over favourite Nectar Crown in the 1200 metres Antargange Plate, the concluding race of the day. De Sousa celebrated his victory by leaping out of his saddle at the leading in ceremony and repeated the act for the benefit of the photographer. He seemed to be mighty pleased with this success which perhaps may have come after a longish break in his career.
