Clear Mandate swells Dhariwal’s tally

Trainer Jaggy Dhariwal has taken a vice like grip on the championship stakes with a healthy lead with just over half way stage of the Bangalore Winter Season. He swelled his tally by another two points on Tuesday by saddling a brace of winners including in the F K Irani Memorial Trophy, a seven furlongs race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of the day. It was a disappointing day for jockey Suraj Narredu who was astride several fancied runners but found success in only one race of the day.

Clean Mandate had performed poorly in the Golconda 2000 Guineas as he found the mile long trip stretching his stamina reserves to the hilt. Now back over a more suitable trip of seven furlongs, the progeny of Burden of Proof asserted his supremacy with a comfortable win over late rallying Flaming Lamborgini and Soberano. Red Renegade, who was also expected to be a serious contender, burst his blood vessels approaching the final bend and faded out of reckoning to end up last. Red Renegade led the field for a brief while before Spartan took over the running. Jockey C Hayes gradually worked his way on Clear Mandate from the wide outside draw to be in striking position behind the front runner. Clear Mandate cruised past The Spartan inside the final 350 metres and broke into a big lead. Though Flaming Lamborgini closed in with a rush, Clear Mandate was not in danger of being caught up with

Sunstone had twice finished second best but he continued to enjoy the trust of the race goers who made him a firm favourite yet again in the 1400 metres Kollur Plate (Div I). Supremacy settled down to lead the field followed by Sunstone, Gazaki and the rest. Sunstone shook off Supremacy to take charge in the homestretch but found Gazaki proving formidable in the end. The latter managed to sail ahead in sight of the winning post. Supremacy weakened to finish a faraway third.

Sunstorm who had recorded a smashing win in his last outing was strongly backed to win the lower division of the race ahead of Cherelle and the rest. Gluteus Maximus, who had run a suggestive third to Kilimanjaro over an extended trip in his last outing, was quietly fancied. After Camorra brought the field into view and weakened, Cherelle showed up briefly even as favourite Sunstorm was looming large on the wide outside. In the meanwhile, Gluteus Maximus who had made rapid strides from behind came through with a powerful run and even before Sunstorm could squeak into the lead, had gone away from him. Gluteus Maximus won with great deal of comfort from Sunstorm in the hands of Irish jockey Mark Gallagher who had made India his home for well for a decade before migrating to Singapore at the turn of the century. Gallagher, who has ridden many classic winners in Bangalore, will be seen action for about three weeks in India before he returns to Singapore where he is riding with fair amount of success. ``It has been a hard grind but rewarding as well’’ said Gallagher when asked about his Singapore experience.

In an incident filled day when as many as five jockeys were unseated from their horses and suffered minor injuries, the running of the 2000 metres Vedavati Plate saw jockey John having a fall on favourite Indravati soon after crossing the winning post. North Cape was the pace setter for the mile and quarter trip and for once in his career, he looked as though he might oblige after all. However, he began to weaken inside the final 100 metres even as Allez Vite ducked towards the rails from wide outside and came into strong contention. Indravati too joined issue and in the process, squeezed out North Cape. Apprentice jockey Nausad Alam managed to steer Allez Vite to win by a whisker over the favourite. Soon after crossing the winning post, John’s leg came off from the stirrup which he tried to regain for some distance before having a fall.

The first race, the Sriharikota Plate for maiden two year olds, saw two jockeys suffering a fall. Intrigue played up a lot in the paddock and even as jockey S Chinoy was trying to get onto the horse, the filly reared up and the jockey fell horizontally on his back with a thud, even hurting his head in the process. He was bleeding from the mouth but luckily it was not due to any impact of the fall but due to him biting his tongue. The jockey was in great agony and was carried off on a stretcher. Formidable Quest appeared to be jumping over non existing hurdles in front of the Grand Stand, causing jockey Md Shoaib to be thrown off from the saddle. Spiffy jumped outwards from the outside draw and lost all her chances. Favourite Current Ray had things in control from the top of the straight though for a brief while Win Again threatened to overhaul the favourite. Current Ray checked in well clear of Win Again and Shahraan.

Apprentice jockey Adarsh who is getting winners with some frequency of late, steered Romance In The Air to a thrilling win over Marie Curie in the B C Prabhakar Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. After tracking stablemate Game Dancer into the straight, Romance In The Air surged ahead and though she was hard pressed by favourite Marie Curie, she held on by the skin of her teeth. Another fancied runner Sweet Timer was a tame third.

Don Diego who had consistently found one better on numerous occasions, finally obliged in the Altenberg Plate when winning with a start to finish mission over The Phenomena and Seaside Star. Apprentice jockey N Rajesh had a fall on Intizara on way to the starting gates and the filly was withdrawn from the fray.

The biggest upset of the day came on Faraz Arshad trained Smar Exotic who held off the challenge of Fame And Glory to win the 1400 metres Kailash Plate, returning the highest dividend of Rs 418 on a tenner! Spark of Knight who came in for good support close to race time, raced in earnest but found the favourite and the rank outsider beyond his reach.

In the day’s other action, Sun Forever who was making his debut as a four-year old, proved to be overwhelmingly superior, checking in by a widening margin of eight lengths in the 1400 metres Jamuna Plate. The bookmakers, in the `Absence’ of any strong opposition, were too miserly in quoting the odds on the winner from trainer Irfan Ghatala.
