Sirono maintains unbeaten streak

Prithviraj trained Sirono further enhanced his credentials as a sprinter to reckon with while maintaining his unbeaten run with a decisive win in the 1200 metres Dariya Daulat Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of Friday’s races. Jockey Suraj Narredu was in the limelight booting home favour winners.

Sirono is sure to be campaigned ambitiously in the Sprinters Cup which is to be run in March at Mumbai. The Dariya Daulat Trophy was an ideal opportunity to exploit the handicap advantage before the progeny of Emerald Cat moved on to terms races where he is expected to cross sword with seasoned runners. Sirono was quoted at unbackable odds as none in the fray looked capable of upsetting him. The horses with proven record like Atlantus was running at a handicap disadvantage as he was carrying a back breaking load of 64 kgs on his back while Optimus Prime who is troubled by several problems, was having his first start after a longish absence from the track.
The speedy Successor led the field from the start with Classic Charge in close attendance followed by Still Will, Sirono, Stone of Destiny, Atlantus, Advantage Logan, Magnanimity and Optimus Prime. Successor held his sway till the final furlong at which point, Sirono had picked up enough momentum to go surging ahead. He won sparing a little more than a length at the finish. Classic Charge ran on to finish third while Atlantus found the weight a stopper. The winner clocked a smart time of one minute 12.28 seconds.

The Karnataka Racehorse Owners Association Trophy, a terms race for three year olds over six furlongs, has traditionally featured some good juveniles in the fray. This year there were just four runners in the fray and of them, Mad About You who had twice finished second best, appeared to have clear cut credentials to win. Debutant Ace Blood who is a full sister to the well performed Adolfito was spiritedly backed as the filly was quite forward right from the start of the season though a mild fever had delayed her debut. Mad About You went on a start to finish mission with Chris Hayes on Ace Blood restraining her from running too keen. In the homestretch, the market fancies fought out a close battle before Ace Blood emerged the better of the two in the shadow of the post, sparing a long neck at the finish. Free Styler was a faraway third.

Trainer Neil Darashah recorded a double after a longish break by winning both the divisions of the Harangi Plate, a seven furlongs race for horses rated 60 to 85. Mighty Heart had come down in handicap scale and was well prepared to have a go though he did not attract big quantum of money in the ring. Captain’s Lover, What A Friend, Bucephalas and Lock And Load were in the betting in what appeared an evenly matched field. Mighty Heart chased Lock And Load into the straight and then gathered speed and went storming ahead inside the distance post to win in the hands of jockey Mark. Lock And Load just about lasted out to claim the runner up spot from Bucephalas while What A Friend failed to produce the spark of his last run and finished a poor fourth.

Jockey Mulrennan drove out Hatsuhana to contain the challenge of Lowndes Square to win the lower division of the race. Hatsuhana was strongly fancied to win on the basis of his good forward run in his previous essay. Baton Rouge led the way with Alpha Baby, Rugged Beauty and Hatsuhana in close proximity while Lowndes Square was held back in the rear group. With a furlong out, Hatsuhana showed up in front with Lowndes Square ranging up on the outside. The latter appeared to be travelling better but Mulrennan was able to elicit that bit extra from the favourite to snatch a nose verdict. Alpha Baby, who appears to have lost form, was a tame third.

Modern Art who has won just won race in her career continued to attract more support than the rest simply because punters were not sure as to where to look for a winner. Saddle Queen came in for spirited support close to race time with The Senator ending up as the third favourite while Lester was quietly fancied. The Senator who took over the running at the top of the straight, flattered to deceive as he did not have an answer to the onslaught launched by Saddle Queen who warmed up in nick of time, and overhauled the front runner with something to spare. Lester came up with a long stretch run to snatch the third spot from Misty Moonlight while Modern Art faded out after staying in touch with the front runners till the final 350 metres.

Suraj Narredu drove out failed Fiorucci like a man possessed to pull off a thrilling win over favourite Flame Back in the concluding race of the day. Both these runners were backed spiritedly and as per market expectations were involved in a close duel for supremacy. Inside the final furlong, Flame Back appeared to have gone into a decisive lead even as Fiorucci was taking time to accelerate but once he did, he came home with a big rush to get the verdict in the closing strides of the race. Fiorucci had failed in the hands of Selvaraj but obliged in the capable hands of Suraj which has now become a pattern with horses trained by Irfan Ghatala. Not Not Seven ran a suggestive race while finishing third.

Refresh was backed with conviction by the people in the know despite the last three runs of his being pedestrian. Refresh went sailing clear inside the final 300 metres after racing a handy second and won with plenty to spare from Giving Me The Money and Sprawling Elegance in the Native Chieftain Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Showers of Luck appeared to be cut above the rest in the lower division of the race and the one sided support was perfectly justified as the progeny of Diffident checked in six lengths clear of Jewel Lady and Son of the Sun.
