Mountain Range proves too speedy

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Mountain Range proved too superior to the opposition while winning the 1400 metres Sringeri Plate, a race for maiden three year olds, one of the highlights of a lacklustre card of eight events that was gone through on Friday. The quality of racing on display was poor and given the fact that the season is soon to end, perhaps it is only to be expected.

Mountain Range, Arabian Gold and Magnomical were all equally well supported to begin with but the first named firmed up as a favourite close to race time. Mountain Range had run third in his first outing before running listlessly at Hyderabad where he took a fly jump, stumbled and then was out of contention. The progeny of Razeen had made good progress in the intervening period but the fact that his last run was bad was the reason why the connections of Arabian gold and Magnomical who had run a forward race in the Governor’s Trophy had a number of takers. One horse which impressed in the paddock was Hill Rising but with the owner mate being the hot favourite, her chances were not considered good.

Jockey John had Mountain Range dictate the pace from the word `go’ with Arabian Gold in close proximity but the character of the race altered once these two runners took the final stretch. Arabian Gold failed to quicken while Mountain Range kept on increasing the lead to go clear of the field. Hill Rising finished with a powerful run to take the second spot ahead of Arabian Gold while Magnomical was completely out of depth.

The only trophy event of the day, the Talkad Trophy was won by favourite Fame And Glory who lasted out in his front running effort and won from late rallying Sunset Grill. There was support for Chantilly Jewel but she could not make much headway after racing prominently till the final furlong.

The progeny of Midtown, Show Time who had impressed in a mock race, was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the BARI Plate (Div I). Show Time had no problem in disposing the exclusion of the rest. She easily contained the challenge of another debutant Café Del Monte in a smart time of one minute 14.90 seconds. Show Time is a good type of youngster. Gun Salute, with a late rally, edged out Mi Amor for the third spot. The lower division of the race was won by favourite Migrolinio who brooked no opposition as he won with a start to finish dash from Saganaki in a relatively slow timing of one minute 16.22 seconds.

Brunetta was fancied ahead of Dramatic Dancer in the N E Raymond Memorial Plate (Div I). Dramatic Dancer appeared to be in season and she was swishing her tail as she was loaded into the gates which perhaps may be the reason for the filly’s below par performance. Amit Cady’s In The Zone who had come down more than 20 points in the handicap scale, was backed by those in the know despite his lack of any forward effort in his recent outings. In The Zone slipped through along the rails with a furlong out and held off the strong finish of Brunetta to win after a very long gap. Amar Prem was the betting rage in the lower division of the race where last time winner Sabari also came in for inspired support. The expected thrust on Supreme arch was not noticed in the ring and he ran at lucrative odds. However, the progeny of Black Cash showed up strongly in the final furlong and easily held off the challenge of Refresh and Amar Prem who was never in with a fighting chance. Sabari circled round the field at the final bend and was poorly handled by apprentice Pradeep as she finished a poor fourth. Leon Cavallo returned with a burst blood vessel.

Both the divisions of the Gokarna Plate had poor quality runners in the fray and winner-picking could only be a shot in the dark in such a scenario. Count Royal, who had recently changed hands, was backed down from a higher quote of 10 to 1 to end up at less than 3 to 1 in the ring. There were several horses which had their share of supporters. As it happens in this sort of races, trainer Sharat Kumar’s Cesaria managed to kick on to record a comfortable win over late finishing Silver Court who managed to neck out Count Royal from the runner up berth. The lower division of the race was won by Unchallenged who faced a stiff fight from the well backed favourite Another Voice, another Sharat Kumar trainee, but held on to record a narrow win. Jockey John tried to reverse the verdict in the Stewards room by lodging an objection against jockey V R De Sousa for crossing him in the final 100 metres which resulted in him in losing ground and the race. The objection was thrown out in quick time as it was John who had been continuously obstructing the path of Unchallenged right from the top of the straight.
