Carla wins on day of hard-knock for punters

Ironically the only favourite that won on the opening day’s races of the Bangalore Summer Season on Saturday was Carla who had let down as an on-money favourite in her last run in winter. Carla managed to get the measure of Sirono in the final strides of the race to win the Kirshnaraja Wadiyar Cup, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of the day. Samar Singh’s Lovely Kiss smashed the opposition in the day’s other highlight by recording a very impressive win.

The start to the eagerly anticipated season was anything but bizarre for punters as the first three races of the day were consumed by lesser fancied runners. Lad King had the credentials to win the opening race of the day, the 1200 metres Welcome Plate, a race for maiden three year olds, but he certainly did not deserve the one-sided support. Arabian Gold who is bred as half-brother to classic winning Flaming Arrow is a capable horse though the fact that he was essaying a trip that was reckoned to be sharp for his style of running may have been the reason why he was allowed at fancy price. In the event, Arabian Gold who chased Magnomical into the straight, assumed command with a furlong out and won in the hands of Australian jockey Noel Callow who was making his debut in India. Callow is a highly regarded jockey and had won the jockeys championship at Singapore in 2007. Callow seemed to have no problem in adjusting to the right handed track. Lad King could not accelerate in the straight and finished a disappointing second. Pedigree Nick ran on from behind to edge past Magnomical for the third spot.

Carla opened as a firm favourite to win the day’s feature event but since she had bled in her last run, race goers hesitantly supported her in the ring. Sirono who had a setback when sent to Mumbai for the Sprinters Cup, was showing out in the workouts though on handicap difference vis-à-vis his clash with Carla in the past, he was bound to find the weight difference going against him. Classic Charge showed the way to the eight-horse field with Sirono and Carla in striking proximity. Classic Charge put up a dogged resistance before Sirono managed to put his neck in front. However, his supremacy was short-lived as Carla came up with a late charge to get the nod close home.

Lovely Kiss had run behind the well performed Midtown Magic in her first outing and then had gone on record an impressive win towards the fag end of the season. Silken Touch who had gone down fighting to Tiberius cornered all the support in the ring. Lovely Kiss was enthusiastically supported to win by her supporters while Preordained was at lucrative odds. Srinath had a fall on Preordained in front of the Grand Stand causing the horse to be withdrawn. Srinath reportedly bruised his knee. Scarlet Knight and Crown Vision led the field from the start with jockey Chary working his way gradually from the outside draw to stay in touch with the front runners. Silken Touch was settled in about fourth or fifth position. With Scarlet Knight going slightly wide at the final bend, Lovely Kiss got a dream run along the rails and the Hazara Stud Farm bred daughter of Rebuttal was quick to seize the initiative and go sailing clear. Silken Touch joined issue but was flat footed as Lovely Kiss skipped away to record an emphatic by a widening margin of six lengths. Deep Blue Sky was a faraway third.

Admiral was backed down to on money favouritism in the Royal Command Plate (Div I) with Gun Salute having his share of supporters. Admiral led from the start but started sending distress signals with a furlong out. Gun Salute quickened in the hands of jockey Appu and stretched away for a facile win. One Cool Cat ran on from behind to finish second. Ganapathy’s Gold Venture was the firm favourite in the lower division of the race though in the absence of any worthwhile horse in the fray, she was backed to win over a five and half furlong trip where her breeding suggests that she is at home over twice that distance. Rank outsider Shuddering who chased the favourite into the straight, went ahead inside the final quarter mile and held off the belated challenge of well fancied Dancing Emeralds to bring off the biggest upset of the day. Gold Venture weakened to finish third. Shuddering returned a dividend of over 200 to 1 on a tenner on the tote!

It was difficult to pick a winner in the 1200 metres Sha Tin Plate because of the absence of any surface form. Splendid Dancer was considered to have the best credentials so much so that her odds shortened significantly despite no visible improvement in her performance capabilities as evidenced by her runs in winter. Splendid Dancer did raise hopes with a start to finish effort but she could not sustain the effort as Nityanand trained Divine Touch came home with a big run on the wide outside to record a facile win at nourishing odds. Aetius also ran above expectations to finish third.

Castro who had let down as a favourite, was backed to the exclusion of his rivals in the 1400 metres Rare Gem Plate with the odds on Dancerella going up significantly. Castro failed to justify the immense faith of the punters as he plodded home to be a poor third. Dancerella fought a stiff battle with the quietly fancied Top Secret before getting the better of the former in the shadow of the post.

North Cape who had let down on quite a few occasions, perhaps relished the underfoot conditions and a weak opposition as he led from the start and then sped away from favourite Gunpowder to record an easy win in the hands of apprentice jockey Kiran Rai.
