Suraj Narredu to ride to Arlington Park

India’s top jockey Suraj Narredu is all set to break new ground when he leaves India on Thursday evening to Chicago to ride at Arlington Park. The ambitious young jockey has the unique distinction of being the first Indian to complete 1000 winners in record time and he has always looked for opportunities to achieve newer targets. The chance to ride at Arlington Park should help Suraj hone his skills further and he should come back as a stronger jockey in every aspect. Suraj will have a stint of a month and half which he could stretch depending on the way things shape up.

There are many Indian jockeys who have achieved much more than Suraj but they did not have his adventurous trait. In fact, one or two of the top Indian jockeys had shied away when presented with opportunity to ride abroad. Only Srinath rode with big success abroad, at Macau where he had more than 20 winners in one season. To-date this rates as the best performance by an Indian jockey abroad. Suraj who tasted big success at Mauritius winning the jockeys championship among emerging jockeys two years ago during an international racing festival has done well for himself by setting himself newer benchmarks.

``Riding at USA had always been my dream. I always look for opportunities to be creative and the experience of riding at USA should boost my career graph significantly. Riding against some top jockeys in a totally new environment and different surfaces is sure to enhance my riding skills as also toughen me up in all aspects. I am going to cherish the invaluable experience. I have got a good agent who is sure to get me some quality rides. I am immensely confident of handling pressure,’’ said Suraj who broke the news to Racingpulse about his departing to USA via New Delhi on Thursday. Well known racing journalist Tom Krish who is based at Chicago, has done much of the legwork to ensure that Suraj did not miss out on the opportunity.

``I have been retained to ride for Mr Rakesh Kumar Wadhawan’s horses but they have been kind enough to give me permission to ride at USA though the summer season in Bangalore is going to get underway over the weekend,’’ said Suraj. One remarkable trait of Suraj ever since he began his racing career as an apprentice a decade ago has been his hunger for success which fortunately has not waned. This trait has also helped him to explore and experiment which indeed is a good sign because any jockey in his position would have been content to sit back and relax.

``An Indian jockey riding in Chicago is big news here. I am sure Suraj will do everything to help get India riders recognition,’’ Tom Krish said. He will be keenly following Suraj’s progress at Arlington Park and other racing centers.

Suraj has been winning the jockeys championship in Bangalore with amazing consistency. He has won several Derbys but his biggest win thus far has been the success on Becket in the Gr 1 Indian Turf Invitation Cup where he managed to outwit Indian Derby winner Jacqueline in the dying moments of the race.
Here’s wishing Suraj the very best in his latest endeavour.
