Big boost for Indian breeding

Indian racing got a big boost when the proud son of Noverre, Le Havre gave trainer Jean-Claude Rouget and jockey Christophe Lemaire a second Classic success of the season when bursting through late on to win to win the Prix du Jockey Club (Group 1) at Chantilly on Sunday. The French Derby success of Le Havre has indeed come as a great piece of news for India as Noverre is currently standing at North India based Sohna Stud Farm as a stallion.

Le Havre’s Gr.1 Prix du Jockey-Club victory was the centerpiece of a sensational four-timer for his trainer Jean-Claude Rouget at yesterday’s Chantilly meeting, as he and jockey Christophe Lemaire captured all of the day’s three Group races. Unlike at Epsom, there was no repeat Classic winner, with favourite Silver Frost (Verglas), hero of the Poule d’Essai des Poulains, only sixth after failing to stay the trip. Le Havre was two lengths second in the Longchamp colts’ Classic and he powered home to deny the Head family’s Fuisse (Green Tune) by a length and a half. Poule d’Essai des Poulains third Westphalia (Danehill Dancer) filled the same position here for Aidan O’Brien, while H H Aga Khan’s Beheshtam (Peintre Celebre) returned a small profit on the fee paid to supplement him for the race by finishing fourth.

Le Havre is the son of former Darley stallion Noverre (Rahy), who has been at stud in India since last year and stands at Sohna Stud near Delhi, and is the first foal of his dam, Marie Rheinberg (Surako), a half-sister to the Gr.1 winning sprinter, Pivotal’s sire Polar Falcon (Nureyev).
Sohna Stud Farm which had Ontario as its stallion, went in for massive expansion last year and the Noverre was the highlight of their major purchases which included high quality mares which have already foaled champions in India. One of the most expensive stallions to be bought by an Indian stud farm, the first crop of Noverre is already on ground.

Noverre was a leading first crop sire and he has had 23 two-year old winners including Royal Ascot speedster Elhami and Truly Royal. Noverre was a champion European miler at three. The 10-year old son of Rahy out of Danseur Fabuleux (Northern Dancer) has 12 top-class race performances from two to four over distances of six to ten-and-a-half furlongs. He won the Sussex Stakes which highlighted his tremendous turn of foot. He won two Group races at two. Noverre, who is a three-part brother to Arazi, enjoyed a Time Form rating of 125.

Noverre is a sire of over 60 winners and the list included many stakes and graded race performers in northern hemisphere. He has sired six winners thus far in the southern hemisphere.
