Green Bax bounces back to register fine win

Trainer Michael Eshwer broke his winless sequence when the well performed veteran from his stables, Green Bax bounced back to win the 1200 metres V T Velu Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 80 and above, which featured the penultimate day’s racing of Bangalore Summer Season on Thursday. On a day when most horses cut impressive timings, Green Bax won in a smart time of one minute 24.83 seconds. The seven year old gelding who showed out in the paddock parade, reproduced his old spark when getting the better of favourite Mark of Gibraltar.

Green Bax is one of the most versatile performers and he has had a bagful of wins to his credit. However, age and younger horses had made things difficult for him but he proved that he has not lost his zest for racing as he profited from the forward run he had against a vastly superior opposition in Rhapsidion Snow’s record breaking win and enabled his trainer Eshwer who was going through a lean patch to get some respite.

It was curious to see Advisor to Racing Fin Powrie searching for something on the race track just after the winning post. One presumed that something precious had been lost till the truth was out. He was looking for potholes, ant-holes and rat holes! The jockeys had complained about the horses’ foot getting stuck in these deep holes but luckily the course workers were able to spot the offending holes and fill them with sand!

Coming back to the feature event, Mark of Gibraltar was backed down spiritedly to land the spoils but the poor run of trainer Ganapathy continued as the got-abroad gelding found Green Bax striking form at an inopportune time. The well backed Sugar Ray led all the way and brought the field into the homestretch but on straightening, he could not sustain as Green Bax essayed a strong challenge and went ahead. Mark of Gibraltar came up with a strong bid but found the front runner not in a mood to relent and had to be content with the runner up berth.

Neil Darashah trained Celestial Son extended his winning sequence to three when he easily beat the challenge of Cart Wheel and Phoenix Reach with a start to finish dash in the Capricorn Stud Plate (Div I). The winner clocked an impressive time of one minute 12.73 seconds. There was a heavy downpour just before the start of the lower division of the race and the character of the track altered dramatically. The fancied runners were not sighted as they failed to handle the going. Bottom weighted Marcegalia led from the bend and was in sight of a win when Van De Star found his bearings along the rails and managed to beat the front runner in the closing stride of the race. The timing of one minute 16.65 seconds clocked by the winner tells its own tale.

Padmanabhan trained Red Renegade was one of the most impressive winners of the day. Red Renegade showed remarkable improvement in his second run after being gelded as he bolted to the front and kept expanding the lead to unassailable proportions. Systematic who was the favourite, bridged the gap in the end but the front runner proved too good in the end. Systematic has been pretty unlucky to find one better on two occasions. On the evidence of this win, Red Renegade should prove his mettle in graded races. Red Renegade clocked a good time of one minute 25.72 seconds.

Glory To Dancer recorded an encore in most emphatic fashion in the Maj Newton Davis Memorial Cup in one minute 25.47 seconds. Glory To Dancer skipped away from Dream Park and the rest inside the final furlong to win in splendid fashion. The Pradeep Annaiah trainee can be exploited to win richly endowed races. Modern Art who was one of the fancied runners, was badly clipped by one of the runners at the start and thereafter, the filly who came back sour, did not raise a fluent gallop. Noble Sacrifice who sported blinkers perhaps did not relish the equipment and ran poorly. Savvy Concept ran on well from behind to finish third. Anglefire showed some spark after a long time when finishing fourth and can strike before long.

The driving finish of jockey Y N Srinath enabled So Much More to win the Leading Owner Cup (Div II) from a late rallying Ready To Mingle. Smart N Special did the entire front running but lost steam in the final stages of the race.

Interestingly, Virtuoso gets the distinction of winning a maiden race twice. After the progeny of Local Talent won the maidens race last time, he was relegated to second position following an objection by the runner up who faces the threat of losing the race, this time in the Stewards room, for breach of medication rules. Virtuoso, who would otherwise have been ineligible to race, thus had an opportunity to run a maidens race which he won quite competently from Alcestis. His record will show an improbable record of two wins in a maidens’ race!

Leave It to Me perhaps did not take kindly to the attempt of jockey Imran Chisty to ride her in restraint as she fought for her head for most part of the 200 metres journey. And when the pace quickened, she was found wanting and despite covering good ground, found the front running Shade of White better. Leave It to Me appears to be hopelessly one paced.

Shot of Gold brought off a big upset when trainer Britto’s ward burst clear of the field at the top of the straight to win comfortably from Western Palace. Flip Your Destiny picked up momentum in the final furlong but that was not good enough to carry him past the front runners.
