Palazzio’s Sun wins in season’s best timing

Palazzio’s Sun has been quiet a revelation after he was switched to sprints. The son of Alnasr Alwasheek out of champion sprinter Palazzio, Palazzio’s Sun recorded his second straight win over a sprint when he won the Gr 3 Bangalore City Gold Cup, the feature event of Friday’s races, in the season’s best timing of one minute 12.12 seconds in a close finish from Originality.

Since Palazzio’s Sun had beaten the same set of opposition on more or less the same terms, the Padmanabhan trainee was expected to repeat the feat though he was running after a considerable break. There was strong support for Originality who had finished third to Palazzio’s Sun on the last occasion when the filly had not got a clear run at a crucial stage of the race. Whether that was reason enough for people to plump in some measure for Originality was not clear but the race ran true to the script, with Palazzio’s Sun emerging a gutsy start to finish winner.

Smaller the field, greater the uncertainty goes the saying in racing. It is in races with small fields that one has witnessed the unexpected. However, there was no deviation the way the race ran as Palazzio’s Sun, hit the front as is his wont, from the innermost draw, and led the field all the way. Aurelian kept company till the final bend but fell back, losing steam. Palazzio’s Sun came in clear of the rest with Originality hot on his heels. Originality closed in with a spirited run but despite the all out efforts on the part of jockey Prakash, she could not overhaul the front-runner. Diamond Hunter ran on to finish third while Spirituall, who was expected to extend the favourite, was outpaced from the start and finished poorly.

Desert Rule had gone down to Equidae close home in his last outing and the progeny of Desert Style came through this time over the extended trip of nine furlongs quite capably. The last race of the day was held in pouring rain and Desert Rule possibly relished the conditions as he cruised into the lead from a forward position at the final turn and established a useful lead. Spark of Reverence was the only realistic challenger but jockey Gaurav Sapra was not up to the task as his reliance on the whip saw the gelding drift from outside to the rails and then show a distinct dislike for the punishment. Spark of Reverence closed in strongly when the jockey used his hands but the leeway established by the front runner held him in good stead. Pelikano covered plenty of ground towards the finish to take the third spot ahead of Fair Option. Corbett was never in the hunt.

Pesi Shroff trained Natouchka was taking on a weak field at the fag end of the season when only the poor quality three-year olds are left to compete. As such, Natouchka’s win in the Track Lightning Trophy over a sprint was on expected lines. Natouchka held off the challenge of front-running Royal Invader quite easily while Star Presence was a long way third.

Arjun Mangalorkar’s Table Mountain recorded an encore while winning the 2000 metres Patrons Cup from Portobello and Dante’s Peak. The Dashmesh Stud Farm bred Table Mountain came through with a powerful run in the final furlong and went sailing ahead of Dante’s Peak who had threatened to bring off an upset and then staved off the spirited bid of Portobello who came up with a flourishing run along the rails.

Lowndes Square recorded a facile win in the Bold Gesture Plate (Div I) where the well backed Price To Fame found the winner too speedy for comfort. In a slow run race, Lowndes Square skipped away at the top of the straight, giving no chance to his opponents. The drifting odds on Classic Commander had no bearing on the outcome of the result in the lower division of the race as the Ruia Stud Farm bred won untroubled from Sunny Connexion.

Voice of India was backed down spiritedly close to race time and the progeny of Libor readily obliged as the front running Simply Phenomenal slackened inside the final 100 metres. Under the relentless use of the whip by jockey Afsar Khan, Voice of India gained ground on the front runner and got the upper hand in the shadow of the post to land a good gamble.
