Noble Prince wins in a canter

Padmanabhan trained Noble Prince asserted his supremacy quite easily in the Gr 3 Governor’s Cup which featured the concluding day’s races of the Bangalore Summer Season on Friday. Fittingly, Padmanabhan who won the lion’s share of the graded races during the season also was the champion trainer, saddling 22 winners. Jockey Suraj Narredu was the leading jockey. The Kunigal Stud Farm which has consistently won the leading stud farm trophy during the winter season extended its domination to the summer season as well, winning the trophy for the first time.

Noble Prince was not expected to have any problem in winning the Governor’s Cup. Since the weather held good and there was no rain which could have posed problems for the big made Noble Prince, the son of Placerville recorded his second graded race success of the season, having earlier won the Gr 2 Maharaja’s Cup without any hiccup. Given the problems that Noble Prince had right through his career, the five-year old has been a remarkable performer and the trainer deserves praise for keeping him going in top form.

Arabian Knight led as the field set out for the 2400 metres trip with Abs Fabs in second position followed by Noble Prince, Vanquish and Angelique. Whatever chances that dual Derby winner Abs Fabs vanished when her jockey C Alford unwisely chased Arabian Knight and even forged ahead mid-way through, giving one the impression that the jockey had forgotten what distance of the race was! Abs Fabs was a spent force well before the final turn and Arabian Knight once again seized the initiative, with Noble Prince gradually improving to cover the leeway. Noble Prince sailed ahead on straightening and then burst clear to win by a widening margin of over five lengths over Arabian Knight. Vanquish finished third ahead of Angelique while Abs Fabs was a dismal last.

Pradeep Annaiah trained Alaric recorded a hat-trick of wins when staving off the challenge of Caprioska in the 1400 metres Leading Stud Cup. The daughter of Diffident, who won three races besides placing in her only other run, was declared the horse of the season. It was a fruitful season for trainer Pradeep who had a lean patch in the preceding seasons. He had a double for the day as his other ward Royal Artist recorded an upset win in the Champion Jockey Cup (Div III) where favourite Storm Chaser bled and faded out of contention long before the race came on the boil.

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Optimus Prime made a smashing debut, winning the 1200 metres Leading Bookmaker Cup in splendid fashion. The Dashmesh Stud Farm bred Optimus Prime who was backed down spiritedly, left the field standing at the top of the straight and won by over nine lengths over Brunetta who did not show any progress during the season, though she has been a consistent stakes earner. Optimus Prime clocked a good timing and looks capable of a repeat performance.

Irfan Ghatala’s Criminal Lawyer, who had failed to display his true potential as a favourite, trounced the opposition in the 1200 metres Champion Trainer Cup (Div I) confirming the erratic form graph of the stable during the season. Jockey Vinod Shinde who rode the winner thus had his maiden winner of the season. Vinod had missed most of the action during the season due to an injury. Topkapi was fancied to win but he proved to be unreliable and faded out of contention under pressure. He seems to be pretty ordinary. Incredible was a well beaten second ahead of Rule of Attraction. Imperial Guest’s narrow win over Mega Joy in the Division II of the race, came as a welcome relief to trainer Ganapathy who has had a pretty ordinary season after being the undisputed champion for a number of seasons. Simply Phenomenal who had gone down close home to Voice of India, made amends in the Division III race of the race by making a resolute start to finish bid, skipping away from Mercutio and the well backed She’s A Lady.

Caspian Sea was strongly backed to win the Champion Jockey Cup (Div I) and the progeny of Mr Mellon who found a good opening along the rails in the final furlong, quickened well to win in fine fashion from Voice of India who was finishing on when the cause had been lost. A good touch was brought off by trainer Sharat Kumar on Hidalgo who won the Division II of the race quite capably from Clouseau. Hidalgo had proved to be a veritable money spinner for the connections, obliging whenever fancied strongly. Clouseau had a good break over the rest in the seven furlong race as the horses came into the home stretch but Hidalgo covered ground swiftly and went sailing clear inside the final 100 metres to record an impressive win in the hands of jockey Afsar Khan.

Mr Ambassador was a well backed winner of the Leading Tipster Cup, a race for horses rated in the lowest category. Mr Ambassador proved too good for the field, kicking clear in the final furlong to win with a great deal of comfort from Admiranda who found the winner too speedy for comfort.

  2. I will do so from next week as most hores would have had a run by then and the form would be more apparent. Right now, a number of three year olds are running and only after a run can we make any kind of assessment. The season is just picking up in momentum.
