Bourbon Bay pulls it off in Kempe Gowda Cup

Bourbon Bay, who went into the Kempe Gowda Cup which featured Saturday’s races with the benefit of a race run and the experience of having matched strides with seasoned campaigners, profited by the twin advantage and got the measure of front running Lady Duff close home. Though rains had eased off in the last few days, the water beneath the surface made the going sticky and as such, the inexperienced Optimus Prime who enjoyed favoritism on the basis of his smashing debut win in summer, was found wanting and finished a tame third. However, Optimus Prime should graduate as a good performer after this tough run.

Optimus Prime was backed to the exclusion of his rivals. Angelfire has never been a model of consistency and as such, the drift in her price was not against the run of expectations. Bourbon Bay, who was coming back in distance, was expected to find the sprint sharp for comfort though both his wins in the past had come over six furlongs. Despite having the distinction of beating the very talented Gypsy Magic and running second to the now seasoned customer in his last run, Bourbon King was quoted at generous odds. In normal circumstances, he should have run as an odds-on favourite.

Lady Duff led the field as the field set out for the six furlong trip followed by Optimus Prime, Angelfire and Bourbon Bay, with the rest finding the pace too hot to handle and falling back. Lady Duff did not surrender easily and carried on strongly in front while Optimus Prime found it hard to overhaul the front runner. In the meanwhile, Bourbon Bay who took his own time to warm up came home with fluid strides and got the better of the front runner in the shadow of the post. Angelfire ran a disappointing race. Lady Duff should strike before long.

The timings recorded on the day were on the slower stride due to the underfoot conditions which placed a premium on fitness as also on the ability to handle sticky going. The progeny of Burden of Proof have reveled under these conditions and as such, the impressive win recorded by Corbett was in keeping with this trend. Corbett, who showed out in the paddock parade, provided visiting jockey Chris Hayes with a double for the day. Corbett took control of the proceedings in the final furlong and held off the spirited bid of late rallying Lock and Load. The Contender ran on to finish third while Rugged Beauty ran a poor race.

The driving finish of Hayes had earlier in the day enabled Senor Encima to just about stave off the challenge of Kripa who finished with a rush. Spark of Joy was strongly backed to win the V Gopal Memorial Plate (Div II) but the filly who gave trouble en route to the starting gate, stopped galloping soon after coming out of the gates. Spark of Marchador obliged as a favourite in the upper division of the race. The manner in which Spark of Marchador cruised into the lead at the top of the straight it looked as though he would romp home but he was slowing towards the finish but he had enough leeway to win form Portobello.

Trainer Prasanna Kumar, who led in Spark of Marchador, had a double for the day, his other winner being Magnifique. Magnifique got the better of Black Splendour after a stiff duel in the final furlong and won with a measure of comfort. On money favourite Snow Peaks never raised a fluent gallop and did not justify the spirited support she received in the ring.

Classical Dancer had come down considerably in the scale and as such, the spirited support for him in the B P Shivan Memorial Plate (Div I) gave a clear indication of the shape of things to come. The favourite had no difficulty in disposing of the challenge of Ever So Clever and Dante’s Peak. Luminous Gold was another strongly backed favourite who obliged in the lower division of the race. Luminous Gold raced prominently and steadily increased the lead to a widening margin of five lengths to win from Smart N Special and Damgood.

Brunetta had found one better on numerous occasion but this time out, he proved too superior in the Master Key Plate (Div I) as she romped home in fine fashion. Take My Word ran on to be second ahead of Shot of Gold. Corleone who has had two operations to set right his wind problem, finished fourth.

Yes I Can came through with a good run along the rails in the final two furlongs to win the 1600 metres Kokkarebellur Plate despite drifting out in the final stages of the race. Favourite Persian Princess chased the eventual winner without hope.
