Kyles of Bute causes a major upset

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Kyles of Bute brought off a stunning upset in the Dariya Daulat Trophy, a seven furlong race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of Saturday’s races. Favourite Red Renegade appeared to be traveling well when he brought the field into the straight with a few lengths advantage but he shortened his strides and finished a dismal last. The reason for Red Renegade’s abrupt end to his chances was because of the fact that he burst his blood vessels. Kyles of Bute picked up speed in the final furlong despite drifting out and edged past a tiring Silken Thomas close home to bring off a big upset. Fire Zone picked up all but one from way behind to take the runner up spot.

Red Renegade was the favourite as he was at a tidy handicap mark though he was running in the highest class. The big made Red Renegade was bound to find the underfoot conditions have an adverse effect on his performance but the way he was striding out in front, it looked as though he might pull it off. Silken Thomas, who went in chase of the favourite, overhauled the front runner and quickened well but the effort of going at a good clip undid his chances as he shortened his strides in the shadow of the post. Kyles of Bute wrested the lead and held off the spirited late rally by Fire Zone who raced at the wrong end of the field for most part. Erstwhile classic winner Fleeting Arrow also came home in distress and barely completed the trip.

Leonardo had run behind Sprint Star and ahead of stalwarts like Aboline and D’Artagnan in the Colts Trial Stakes and as such, he enjoyed the highest rating in the race meant for maiden three year olds. On that performance alone, he looked a cinch though one has often seen such horses getting beat despite looking a handicap certainty. Jockey Paswan raced Leonardo in the rear group and then improved position swiftly at the steep gradient and then surged ahead at the top of the straight. But he slackened after raising hopes and had no answer when Cinnamon Rose came swooping on him. Cinnamon Rose recorded a smashing win while Leonardo was a well beaten second. Tuthmosis ran on to finish third.

Six Shooter was another favourite to disappoint. Backed down spiritedly to win the T Dougall Memorial Plate (Div I), Six Shooter burst into the lead with a furlong out but faded out as swiftly as he had showed out. Star Assembly came form way off the pace and went sailing clear to win in fine style from late rallying Coorg Honey. Superb Style displaced Six Shooter from the third spot. Star Presence was backed to the exclusion of her rivals in the lower division of the race and the favourite duly obliged though he had to be ridden out to lengthen her strides. Dramatic Dancer was a noteworthy second.

Favourite First of A Legend failed to oblige his supporters for the second time running in the mile long Half A Crown Plate. Brigade’s Pride led the field into the straight and then skipped away even as jockey Prakash was getting busy on the favourite but the leeway established by the front runner was too long to bridge. Super Spear ran on to finish third while the fancied Son of the Soil ran below expectations.

Soberano was a long pending horse and the progeny of Diffident, despite being hurried to the front too soon by apprentice Khushad, lasted out to win from Stone of Destiny who put up a noteworthy effort after a longish interval.

In the day’s other action, Pradeep Annaiah trained Youre Chilbuli was strongly backed to win and the gelding readily obliged. Carnival of Joy who led for most part tired out in the end and faded out of contention in the final furlong.
