Spark of Gold lasts out to win Police Cup

Jockey Rupesh drove out Spark of Gold to a thrilling win over late rallying favourite Timeless Treasure in the 1600 metres Karnataka Police Cup, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of opening day’s races of Bangalore Summer Races on Saturday. Horses which had been subjected to solid preparation enjoyed maximum support in the ring and their fitness showed in the decisive manner in which they won.

Timeless Treasure was the only horse which had won in his last outing while the rest in fray in the modest field that contested the Karnataka Police Cup, hadn’t won for a long time. Timeless Treasure ended up as the firm favourite with Gloriosa next in demand while top weighted Spark of Gold had his share of supporters. Spark of Gold who made a swift move at the top of the straight and took over the running in the final furlong caught the favourite napping and established a winning lead. By the time Timeless Treasure warmed up and came up with a big run, the winning post had been sighted. Spark of Gold prevailed by a whisker. Jockey Suraj Narredu on Timeless Treasure woke up to his task a fraction late while Rupesh on the winner was quick to pounce on the opportunity. Gloriosa who was sluggish at the start ran on to finish third ahead of Western Command.

Pesi Shroff trained Eloise recorded a pretty win in the 1200 metres Adrian Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Eloise and Friendly Bond were backed spiritedly by their respective supporters. Jockey Appu on Friendly Bond did not get a good start as he appeared to have lost his balance at the jump out as the veered to the right. Eloise too was not well positioned but despite jockey Zervan circling the field and coming the widest into the straight, the daughter of Glory of Dancer had plenty in reserve when checking in well clear of Flying Tricolour and Friendly Bond.

Jockey B Prakash, who was replaced by South African jockey JG Sampson in the last race on Joriki, is not disqualified from riding in Sunday’s races due to an amendment to the rules in the year 2007. Originally, if any jockey missed out action due to some reason or the other, he was not permitted to ride for the next 48 hours. Though jockey Prakash did not ride because of medical reasons, he did not opt out of the ride but was certified unfit to ride by the doctor in attendance. And as such, if the doctor certifies him fit to ride, Prakash can fulfill his engagements. Prakash has a crucial ride on Sunset Boulevard in the Juvenile Million. The 48 hour disqualification rule was put in place by Turf Authorities of India as jockeys had the tendency to report themselves sick to opt out of rides which they did not like but the rule has become archaic. There are instances where jockeys have been genuinely incapacitated which do not need much time to recover. Instead of making a general rule and apply the disqualification rule under all circumstances, the authorities may target those who misuse the privileges.

Be that as it may, Sampson who got a chance ride on Joriki, had a wonderful first day in Bangalore, as he booted home three winners. Joriki was taken to the front approaching the final bend and the progeny of Burden of Proof quickened nicely to win form Corleone who ran on to finish a good second while the rest was stranded far behind.

Sampson has a style which is quite distinct from the ones that we have got used to. He rides more upright but seems quite effective. Sampson began the day with an easy win on Sweet Caroline and then guided Spearhead to a facile win in the Dupont Plate. Spearhead hadn’t won for more than year but he had run a forward race after being gelded during his last run in the winter season. He bounced back to his old form as he smashed the opposition in effortless fashion. Spark of Reverence was a faraway second ahead of Modern Art.

Horses bred at the Kunigal Stud Farm were in limelight as they won four of the eight races while the stud farm stallions had a tally of five as Joriki was by Burden of Proof.

Love Conquers All who was backed down spiritedly, recorded an impressive win in the 1400 metres Lady Gibraltar Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Crown Vision was strongly fancied to win but the top weighted progeny of Brave Act, Love Conquers All came in for sustained support towards the end. Jockey Srinath took Crown Vision on a start to finish mission but the light made filly shortened her strides in the final furlong. Love Conquers All picked up tremendous speed in the closing stages of the race to win with a great deal of comfort. Stormyred was a faraway third. Crown Vision may be more suitable for a sprint.

Soviet Melody who had no worthwhile opposition to beat in the opening race of the day, won quite emphatically. Precept who was backed down with conviction, duly won with a start to finish mission, with Black Beauty rallying late to finish second.
