Sprint Star wins Karnataka Cup with ease

Satish Narredu trained Sprint Star proved that he is invincible on his home turf when beating a seasoned lot of horses en route to a splendid win in the Gr 3 Karnataka Cup, a terms race for four year olds and over, the highlight of Sunday’s races. Though Sprint Star had performed below par in the Gr 1 Super Mile at Mumbai, he showed the form that had fetched him success in the classics over this distance in Bangalore. Sprint Star showed tremendous acceleration to get the better of Icebreaker inside the final furlong to win capably. Onassis came through a difficult passage in the straight to finish third.

The Stewards cancelled the last race of the day due to dangerous underfoot conditions and poor visibility following a thunderstorm just before the horses were to be flagged off for the ninth race.

A competitive field had lined up for the Karnataka Cup. Icebreaker was the favourite but at least three horses were reckoned to have a big chance. The Sohna Stud Farm bred Sprint Star was surprisingly ignored in the ring for a major part but the thrust on him close to starting time was a clear indicator of the confidence of his connections. Onassis has always generated great deal of expectation and he too was well supported. Aristos who had run a mighty race in the Super Mile, steadily lost supporters close to race time.

Bid For Gold was the pacesetter followed by Aristos, Cotswold Arms, Our Little Savage, Gershwin, Icebreaker, with Sprint Star tracking Icebreaker along the rails while Onassis was caught wide. Sans Pareil was tardy at the start and graced the field along with Echoes of Light, with Arabian Prince for company. Sprint Star was hampered for room along the rails and though he fell back a bit at around the 800 metres, Suraj Narredu did well to pursue the path of coming the shortest way home which paid rich dividends in the end.

Cotswold Arms brought the field into the straight, with Srinath quickly improving Icebreaker along the rails while Suraj Narredu who had tracked the favourite also getting into act and angling his horse out after coming the shortest way into the straight. Icebreaker surged into the lead with about 300 metres ago but it was clear that in the duel for supremacy, the superior sprinting ability of Sprint Star was bound to play a crucial role once the son of Ontario ranged alongside. Sprint Star devoured ground in quick time and shook off Icebreaker to record a facile win. Onassis was held up as he was caught behind a horse which was going no where while Arabian Prince did not provide him a chance to move out and make his run. Onassis had to be held up and then made to circle round the field to get a clear run. Onassis had a big leeway to cover and he ended up a faraway third ahead of Sans Pareil who after a sluggish start, came up with a good stretch run to finish fourth. Aristos fell back to finish a surprising last. The winner clocked almost an identical timing of one minute 36.41 seconds which was recorded by last year’s winner Diego Rivera who had also beaten Icebreaker to the top berth.

Prithviraj trained Sirono smashed the opposition in the Own Opinion Trophy (Div I), a race over five and half furlongs. The Capricorn Stud Farm bred three-year old filly Sirono came in for sustained support in the ring even as the odds on favourite Sky Light kept expanding in the ring. Sky Light and Lad Diva who was sporting many equipments led the field as jockey Pradeep Chouhan eased Sirono into third position. Sky Light had a break of few lengths over the rest at the top of the straight but Sirono covered ground briskly in the straight and then went away for an effortless win in a near record timing. Sky Light was reported to have come back lame. Sirono is a good type of youngster and this good looking filly should be able to tackle longer trips as well. A flood of money on Secret Vision saw her price crash in the lower division of the race. Jockey Imran Khan was in a tearing hurry to hit the front from the outside draw and this energy sapping effort saw the favourite shorten her strides inside the final two furlongs. Day Trader who was handily placed, went sailing clear to win in emphatic fashion. Count Royal made a late surge to edge out Secret Vision for the runner up berth.

In an absorbing finish, Jaggy Dhariwal trained Camelot nosed out Desdemona to win the Sir M Visvesvarayya Memorial Cup. The well supported Desdemona took a while to come through the rail and by the time the filly shot through, Camelot had ranged alongside. The duo fought out a close battle, with the bobbing of heads going in favor of Camelot. Had Desdemona not been hemmed up for long, she may have landed the spoils. Desdemona should make amends next time out, possibly over a longish trip.

Duke of Edinburgh who had showed out in a mock race, proved too superior to the field in the 1600 metres Mamma’s Mink Plate. Jockey Suraj Narredu eased Duke of Edinburgh into the lead approaching the final bend and the progeny of Greensmith put daylight between himself and his nearest pursuer Party Tonite to record a comprehensive win. Spark of Joy, who took a level jump this time out, ran on to be third.

Jockey Sunil lost his whip inside the final 300 metres and lost what appeared an assured victory on Spark of Isis in the Abdul Wajid Memorial Plate (Div I). The well supported Spark of Isis broke into what looked like a decisive lead at the top of the straight but Express It who warmed up to the task in the nick of time, was driven out strongly by Frenchman Stephanie to neck out the front runner. Possibly Sunil would have extracted that bit extra with the use of the whip. Stephanie had earlier in the day, guided favourite Blue Origin to victory. Fancied Ladzone lost all chances at the gate itself.

Trainer Leo D’Silva brought off a quiet touch on Rosemead who just about lasted out to win from late rallying Deep Blue Sky in the 1400 metres Barclay Plate. Dance N Celebrate, Kings Admiral and Deep Blue Sky were all backed enthusiastically but in the event, it was the lesser fancied Rosemead who had the last laugh. Rosemead broke into a useful lead at the top of the straight and this held her in good stead as she was able to reach the safety of the winning post before her pursuer could overhaul her.
