Araceli lifts Bharachukki Cup

The Hazara Stud Farm bred Araceli won the Bharachukki Cup, a five and half furlongs race for two year old maidens, the feature event of races held on Friday. The highlight of day was the performance of Padmanabhan trained Kilimanjaro who swamped the opposition in the manner of a horse which could be trusted to make a mark in exalted company. With the track being firm and devoid of moisture, fast timings were par for most races.

The progeny of Adler, Shoot Out cornered all the betting in the race meant for first season runners. The manner in which the odds shortened on him, it looked as though he would have to just complete the formalities of going through with the race. With most horses in the fray being backward, it was understandable. Araceli was working well but the widest outside draw was a dissuading factor for the majority. Shoot Out belonged to trainer Suleiman who has a poor record on favourites. Appu had Win Again dictate the pace as Araceli, from the outside draw, was settled in the second position followed by Brilliance and Shoot Out while the other runners were spaced out behind. Preordained ran green and looked to be far from ready. Araceli shook off Win Again with a furlong out and opened up a useful lead which held her in good stead as Shoot Out made a strong rally but fell short by a shade over a length. Win Again ran on to finish third. The winner clocked a time of one minute 08.14 seconds which must be considered pretty slow considering that fast timings were recorded in most races.

Satish Narredu trained Deep Blue Sky who had finished fourth in the 2000 Guineas, was the betting rage in the 1800 metres Gulbarga Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Spark of Atan had his share of supporters but the rest of the runners ran at nourishing odds. Kilimanjaro, who was regularly seen excelling in morning workouts, had less supporters as he was running over the middle distance after a gap of five months. This made many skeptical about his chances.

Jockey Paul Mulrennan, who was riding in Bangalore for the first time, had Rezoom set a fast clip establishing a runaway lead followed by Spark of Atan, The Darling Boy, Senor Speedy and Gluteus Maximus. The jockey of Foswell has problems in settling the horse on an even keel. Deep Blue Sky was in the penultimate position ahead of Kilimanjaro on whom jockey David Allan did well to hold him off the pace in the last position. Rezoom brought the field into the straight with Kilimanjaro quickly improving position the shortest way home and coming into contention inside the final 300 metres. When asked for an effort, Kilimanjaro shot off like a scalded cat and left the field stranded to win by a widening margin of over five lengths over Rezoom. Gluteus Maximus head Rezoom at one stage but the latter fought back to retain the runner up berth.

Kilimanjaro clocked a fast time of one minute 50.68 seconds. Jockey David Allan said that the horse would enjoy longer trips as well. ``Kilimanjaro has a mind of his own but when he puts his mind on running, he can be quite devastating.’’

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Anna who had lost a few times in close finishes was driven out by John to win the 1200 metres Dharwar Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Royal Surprise who was a costly purchase, has let down her supporters consistently but yet again she garnered maximum support to end up as a favourite. Fiorucci who started as favourite, lost supporters steadily in the ring and her price drift in the betting ring was indicative of the shape of things to come. Royal Nature and Anna had their share of supporters. Jockey V R De Sousa failed to maneuver a forward position on Royal Surprise on whom he improved places on the wide outside to bring the filly into the straight the widest. Royal Surprise picked up speed but in the process caused a severe interference to Fantabulous Star whose jockey Ramesh was lucky to stay on in the saddle. Anna who came the shortest way came into strong contention but with Royal Surprise hesitating to pass Anna, the latter managed to pull away to a comfortable win. Royal Nature, who led the field into the straight, ran on to finish third. Jockey De Sousa was suspended for four race days for careless riding and fined Rs 5,000 for appearing before the Stewards in improper attire!

The well-bred Allez Vite, who is troubled by problems to his joints, won the 1400 metres Malpe Plate in a three horse finish from Flame Back and Dance N Celebrate. Flame Back had her share of problems in the race as she was squeezed out from a forward position and again in the straight, she did not clear run for a while despite which the filly finished powerfully as jockey Mulrennan never gave up his hopes despite the luck of the race going against him. Even Dance N Celebrate would have won with a clear run but Kurshad Alam on Sachimore shut him off for a while and also bumped the horse when jockey De Sousa was electing to take the rails run. Despite the interference, she also finished strongly but Allez Vite who had a trouble free passage managed to reach the safety of the post before the market fancies could get at him. War Artist was out for an airing. Kurshad Alam was suspended for six race days for the interference he caused.

Trainer Darius Byramji saddled a brace of winners as apart from Araceli, he also led in the winner of mile long Royal Russian Plate. Rip Van Winkle stood out in the paddock parade and he ran true to expectations, showing amazing improvement to win by 10 lengths over Seven Star in the manner of a horse belonging to a higher category. Foresight was backed down spiritedly but the one eyed filly found the winner too hot to handle.

With support dwindling for Suleiman’s Classical Charm, Sweet Performer cornered all the support in the Haveri Plate, a race for lowest rated horses over five and half furlongs. After racing a handy third into the straight as Classical Charm set the pace, Fruit King was pushed to take over the running inside the final 250 metres and then sped away to win at nourishing odds from Thrillseker and Sweet Performer who appeared a lost cause well before the race came on the boil.

Irfan Ghatala’s Lad Fury literally had no opposition in the day’s opener where he toyed with the opposition to win the 1200 metres Kalinadi Plate, a race for maiden three year olds. Don Diego, who did the front running till the home turn, was second ahead of Fame And Glory.
