Red Renegade scrapes home in a thriller

Padmanabhan trained Red Renegade who was running in a sprint race for the first time in his career, made an effective switch back in distance by staving off the opposition in the 1200 metres Karnataka Police Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of Saturday’s races. The long absence from the track had its bearing on Red Renegade who was grinding to a halt but the winning post came to his rescue even as Rare And Precious came menacingly close.

Red Renegade had been campaigned over long trips and had even won the Deccan Colts Trial Stakes last year over a mile. Red Renegade did not relish the mile and quarter trip in the two Derbys that he participated in. Compounding his problems was the fact that he bled in one of his runs which saw him being kept off the track for a long time. He made a winning return in summer over seven furlongs and then ran a close fourth in his next outing in a close finish. Red Renegade was sharpened for this race with the benefit of a mock race and by virtue of his earlier accomplishments he went into the race as a firm favourite despite questions raised about the sharpness of trip.

The big made Red Renegade runs best when he races freely in front and jockey David Allan took the favourite to the front from the outside draw to dictate the pace. Successor was in close proximity with the rest of the runners within striking distance of each other. Rare And Precious was relaxed in the rear group. Red Renegade shook off his challenger Successor who put up a dogged resistance but the real challenge for his supremacy came from Rare And Precious who came with a strong run along the rails but just about fell short by a neck. Successor was a close third. The winner clocked a smart time of one minute 12.99 seconds on a day when fast timings were par for the course.

Prithviraj trained Sirono re-affirmed his position as a top sprinter at this centre by emphatically winning the 1200 metres Kehelan Stud Plate in a fractionally better timing than that clocked by Red Renegade. Sirono who had won the Summer Million for three-year olds was backed to the exclusion of his rivals though he was expected to face a stiff challenge from Elusive Way and Sky Train. Elusive Way who played up in the gates, was a bit lethargic at the start and found the top weight and the opposition too strong for comfort as she faded out of the reckoning well before the race came on the boil. Sirono who cantered into the straight, picked up speed smoothly and sped away to win by a widening margin of three lengths from Sky Train who came home with a late bid. Skyliner ran on to be third ahead of Romance In The Air and Elusive Way.

Sans Craintes Stud Farm bred Midtown Magic recorded a facile win in the six furlongs Novice Plate, a race for maiden two year olds. Midtown Magic thus became the third progeny of the now deceased Midtown to win a juvenile race in Bangalore. Midtown Magic moved strongly from the fourth position at the bend to gather speed with minimum of fuss to win by over four lengths over African Queen as on money favourite. Star Marquees had a good educative run and was seen finishing powerfully towards the finish. Midtown Magic should relish the extended trip.

Crown Empress who had recorded a narrow win in her last start, recorded an encore by winning the T B Hanumantharaj Memorial Cup (Div I), a seven furlongs race for horses rated 40 to 65. Crown Empress took charge of the proceedings on turning for home and held off the challenge of Con Artiste. Gunpowder who was expected to put up a good show on the basis of his last winning effort, ran below par, and was a tame third. Accurate was driven out to contain the challenge of front running Camorra in the lower division of the race as a well backed favourite.

Karisini slammed the opposition in the Gomos Plate over the extended trip of nine furlongs. North Cape was backed along with Plaka to have a strong say at the finish. North Cape, who led till the final turn, did not respond to the urgings and surrendered meekly. Karisini steadily moved from about the fifth or sixth position to take over the running with a furlong out and won by a big margin of six lengths over Hard To Pin Down. Matias was a faraway third.

The Dawn and Super Spectacle were backed in equal measure in the Nelamangala Plate with the latter asserting himself, recoding an easy win. Super Spectacle, who was traveling well within himself, sealed the fate of the race with a furlong out and won with something spare over The Dawn and Good Companion.

Amith Cady trained Give Me The Money made the entire running in the 1400 metres Bangarpet Plate and lasted out to win from Seven Star. There was inspired betting on Sourab but the favourite ran out of steam in the homestretch to finish a poor third.
