Sunspirit wins at the expense of Abnoba

Sunspirit edged out Abnoba in the Jog Cup, the feature event of races held on Friday thanks to an opportunistic ride by Richard Hughes. An uncharacteristic ride by Suraj Narredu saw him getting bottled up at a crucial juncture of the race on Abnoba and this was exploited to the hilt by the eventual winner. The better horse on the day suffered a narrow defeat. The six event card turned out to be a drab affair.

Abnoba who had recoded a hat-trick of wins and Sunspirit were both supported enthusiastically in equal measure by their respective connections. In a slow run race, Portaone led the field with Suraj on Abnoba restraining the horse and getting stuck along the rails as Sweet Caroline raced outside of the joint favourite. Sunspirit not only graced the rear but had to travel wide right through. Rounding the final turn, Suraj failed to maneuver a clear run and by the time he could work his way out, Hughes was flat out on Sunspirit who went on to neck out his pursuer. If there were a few strides more to cover, Abnoba would have won easily. Sweet Caroline ran on to finish third.

Trainer Suleiman Attaollahi saddled a nice price double through first timer Silken Touch and Delacroix. In what appeared an open betting affair in the A P Kothawala Memorial Cup, a race for maiden two year olds, Silken Touch came through with a powerful run inside the final 350 metres and sped away from front running Ben Ten to win with great comfort. Bavaria nosed out favourite Hillstone from the third spot. Delacroix had let down huge expectations after an impressive debut win but showed out to in different colors in the Dr S K Pillay Memorial Plate. Delacroix quickened on turning for home to leave favourite Sunstone stranded long way from home. Yamas was a long way behind while taking the third spot. Duchess of York had her share of supporters by the filly that had the widest draw, took a slow jump and lost all her chances.

Gazaki had run a suggestive second behind Cherelle and as expected, she went into the 1400 metres Summer Dust Plate as an overwhelming favourite. Jockey Silvester De Sousa had the favourite in front while the rest seemed to be out of sorts. Gazaki skipped away from the rest at the top of the straight to win by a big margin over Scarlet Knight and Flip Your Destiny.

Indrāvati hadn’t been stretched last time out for which jockey Raja Rao had been suspended. Now backed to the exclusion of his rivals in the 1600 metres Subash Nagar Plate, a race for lowest rated horses, Indrāvati assumed command with a furlong out and recorded a smashing win. Burden On Me was second ahead of Burning Ambitions. There was inspired support for Born To Perform but he ran contrary to his name and was well beaten much before the runners straightened for the homestretch.

Puttanna trained Sabari had finished an eye catching third to Kirtling in her last run and despite doubts about whether the horse would run in serious earnest or not, race goers made her as the favourite. The five-year old mare was not positioned well by apprentice R Pradeep who brought the favourite widest into the straight but Sabari was so good that she won sparing more than four lengths at the finish to Enduring Speed and Good Gift.
