Can Amadeus avenge defeat at level weights?

Pesi Shroff trained Amadeus lost to Speed Six in his last outing at a difference of five kgs but both these horses will be running at level weights in the Gr 1 Colts Championship Stakes, the second classic of the season, to be run on Sunday. Amadeus lost by two and half lengths but can he cover that leeway and more at level weights?
Logically he should but given the fact that Amadeus has faltered over seven furlongs not once but twice in his career makes one wonder whether he has issues with stamina over longer trips. The outcome of the Colts Championship will perhaps decide the destiny of Amadeus as to whether he will be experimented over longer trips or brought back to a sprint. Since Speed Six won over seven furlongs quite well, he should have no problem in tackling an extra furlong.

If both these horses under perform for any reason, there are two horses which are eminently capable of profiting from the same. The unbeaten Tiberius and Mumbai’s Pronto Pronto are both in great shape but they are going into this classic with the benefit of just a mock race which can work to their disadvantage. Star Marquees and Forest Regent are both running over suitable trips but need to make a quantum leap in performance capabilities to land the plum. The same goes for Arrow In Auto Mode who won back to back handicap races. The much hyped Super Duper ran poorly in his last run but should be better for that effort.

Speed Six is by Burden of Proof out of multi-classic winning Six Speed. The Padmanabhan trainee has won both his starts in fine fashion and has plenty of scope for improvement. The well-built Speed Six is the only foal of her illustrious dam to perform well as the others had fizzled out after promising debut wins. With Australian jockey Noel Callow doing the disappearing act, the URBB team had to struggle to find a replacement in the last minute. They were unable to fly in any other jockey as a replacement and the burden of steering the fancied runner now falls on young and inexperienced Trevor Patel who has recently graduated from the apprentice ranks. The tall jockey has talent and it remains to be seen how he handles the pressure of riding in a classic race on a horse which may corner for lot of betting after Amadeus. Since Speed Six is endowed with speed, the big field of 16 runners should not cause any problems as the horse is capable of working out a forward position from the start. The horse is bound to run at nourishing odds because of the jockey factor alone.

Amadeus is working well and should be better off for his runner up effort behind Speed Six. The progeny of Choisir is endowed with a good turn of foot but whether he can carry this brilliance over a mile long trip is something one cannot speculate with any degree of conviction. He came up with a big run in the Poonawalla Million and looked like collaring all but weakened to finish a close third. In his lead up race in Bangalore, he could not pick up speed under pressure and floundered. His trainer Pesi Shroff thinks Amadeus has the class but refuses to speculate about the distance factor.

Imtiaz Sait trained Pronto Pronto has already proved his mettle over a mile long trip. He beat a good quality field, giving weight to his adversaries at Mumbai. He showed out in a mock race. The small made son of Major Impact is no pushover. In fact, he began the season as the highest rated three old at Bangalore, rated a few points higher than Amadeus and Tiberius.

The progeny of Rebuttal, Tiberius won all his outings in winter. He will suffer from a big disadvantage in that he is going into the race without a race run. Tiberius held off the threat of Preordained to win the Winter Million and on the basis of that run, he may have to improve a great deal to win the Colts Championship which has better quality field.

In the final analysis, one is inclined to go with Speed Six notwithstanding the disadvantage of having an inexperienced jockey on his back.
