Hatsuhana prevails in Sub-Area Cup

Neil Darashah trained Hatsuhana built on the good effort that he had put in his last essay by claiming the Karnataka Sub-Area Cup, a seven furlong race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of Saturday’s races from late rallying Tomsk with a measure of comfort. This full brother to multi-classic winning Fleeting Arrow has overcome many a problem and is now performing to his potential.

The last two races of the day were held in rain which intensified significantly after the last race for run. The rains lasted for more than three hours and the underfoot conditions will be on the softer side for Sunday’s races.

Hatsuhana had the credentials but the thrust on him was not so much visible in what appeared a competitive and tricky race for most race goers. He was the favourite at 4/1 while the rest were available at longer odds. Red Renegade led the field followed by Topkapi, Soberano and Hatsuhana while the rest was spaced out behind with Tomsk bringing up the tail end. Jockey Ladjadj Stephane pushed Hatsuhana to take over the running on straightening for home and the progeny of Burden of Proof came up with a flourishing run to take charge with a furlong out. He burst clear of the pack and was in no danger of being caught by seasoned performer Tomsk who made a late rally while finishing an eye-catching second. Atlantus too as is his wont, came up with a late charge to finish fourth.

Ganapathy’s Forever Glory who had run a fair race in the Fillies Championship Stakes, swamped the field in the 1800 metres Richelieu Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Backed to the exclusion of the rest, Forever Glory moved up smoothly from about the fourth position and easily collared the front runners to win comfortably from Sunny Express who gave a futile chase to the winner in the final furlong. Mountain Range who was the pace setter ran on to finish third.

Shezad Abbas trained Swiss Don was the medium of a good touch in the 1400 metres Pendragon Plate. Saratoga Spring began as a favourite but his odds drifted out alarmingly in the ring, with spirited support coming for the Hyderabad runner making him as a favourite from a higher quote. The supporters of Swiss Don would have been an anxious lot as the horse was unable to find foot in the early part and raced in the penultimate position. Field Marshall who was running for the first time after being gelded set a scorching pace with Saratoga Spring and Hill Rising in chase. The second named weakened on turning for home while Hill Rising was pulled out from the rails to essay a strong challenge to Field Marshall. With Swiss Don yet to be spotted, it looked as though the issue would be settled between the front running duo but the favourite came home with a big rush to measure the battling duo in the final strides of the race. Field Marshall nosed out Hill Rising for the second spot. Both these runners should be in the thick of things pretty soon.

Sunset Grill edged out Vayomi in an exciting finish in the 1400 metres Mauritius Pearl Plate (Div I). Vayomi shaped to justify the strong support he received in the ring but Sunset Grill managed to extricate himself from a tight spot before it was too late and managed to charge home with a powerful run and got the nod in the final stride of the race. Sun Gold and Smart Exotic too finished close third and fourth respectively. Indian Royalty who had a good lung opener over an extended trip in his previous outing was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the lower division of the race and the progeny of Royal Kingdom readily justified such an expectation going clear with a furlong out and wining with ease from Legend Reborn who finished on from behind to take the runner up berth.

Top Secret, who was coming back in distance, was surprisingly quoted at unbackable odds. Though he had the credentials, the short price as the one quoted on him in the betting ring was not justified as the credentials of a couple of horses was yet to be ascertained. In the event, first timer Abronia made a profitable start to finish dash and held off the strong challenge from Lady Gaga to prevail by a narrow margin. Top Secret was outpaced in the early part and then struggled for speed to eventually end up as a tame third.

Warren Singh trained Jewel Lady proved too speedy for the rest in the New Market Plate (Div I), winning with a start to finish effort, checking in well clear of the strongly fancied Fruit King. Spring Beauty who had let down a sea of expectations last time out, won the lower division of the race at nourishing odds, leaving the rest stranded in the final furlong to win form late finishing favourite Southern Pearl.
