Siachen sprints away with Chief Minister’s Trophy

Jaggy Dhariwal trained Siachen made an effective switch back in distance to win the Gr 3 Chief Minister’s Trophy, the feature event of Sunday’s races in splendid fashion. Siachen came from way off the pace to collar Sprinters Cup winner Atilla with minimum of fuss to show that she is adept from sprint to a mile. Australian jockey Noel Callow, who rode Siachen to victory, had a rewarding day having also been associated with the success of Sovetskaya, Chantilly and Crown Empress.

Attila, who had won the Sprinters Cup at Mumbai in March, was the favourite though there was absence of enthusiastic thrust as his odds kept on expanding. Siachen and Sirono were the other two horses widely expected to figure prominently at the finish. There was no doubting the class of Siachen who showed out in the paddock parade. The only question mark was the fact that she had performed below par over seven furlongs last summer before asserting her superiority over a mile. She had never been campaigned less than a mile thereafter, the connections even trying her over the mile and half trip in Indian Oaks. So the sprint was reckoned to be too sharp for her. However, the quality of the opposition and the underfoot conditions worked to her advantage as she came from way behind to get past Attila with a furlong out and win by a comfortable margin of over two and half lengths. The manner in which she won should augur well for her chances in the next month’s BTC Anniversary Cup.

Successor, as is his wont, led the field from the start followed by Lady Duff, Sprint Star, D’Artagnan, Sirono and Attila, while Optimus Prime, Carla, Siachen and Kyles of Bute raced in the rear bunch. Sirono shaped to collar Successor on turning for home but the second favourite was clearly not enjoying himself as he weakened instantly. Attila, who was travelling well within himself, had no problem in shooting ahead. Carla and Siachen showed up on the wide outside. Attila’s foray in front came to an end once Siachen found her patented acceleration and she sailed past the front runner to spare a shade over two lengths at the finish. Carla ran on to finish third. Incidentally, the first three placed horses have a pedigree which has shown a distinct liking for cut in the ground and though the penetrometer reading was put at 4 cms, the ground was certainly more yielding. The ground was cut up because of rains during yesterday’s races.

The lack of a race run went against favourite Sun Absolute in the 1600 metres Yeravada Stud Plate as the filly, after cruising into lead at the top of the straight when challenged by Crown Empress showed distress signals. The persevering effort of Callow produced the desired result for Crown Empress. Native Talent was third while Rip Van Winkle and Xtreme appeared to be out for an airing.

Both the divisions of the Everynsky Trophy were claimed by Suleiman Attaollahi trained horses. Chantilly slammed the opposition in the upper division of the race, winning at the expense of Cinnamon Rush. Chantilly should surely do an encore when saddled next. Sovetskaya took her time to warm up before she asserted herself against Aegis in the lower division of the race. Lady Gaga looked far from ready when finishing third. The well-bred For An Angel who is a half-sister to the Group I winning Noble Promise at USA, ran a disappointing race.
The well backed Sun Forever obliged in the Flirting Vision Plate (Div I) where the only threat for her supremacy came in the form of Vayomi who was given too much ground to cover in the straight by jockey Ashok Kumar. May be Vayomi was out for a test run. Sharat Kumar’s Allegro who had gone down narrowly in his last outing, managed to get the better of Shahizaar in the closing strides of the race to win the lower division of the race at nourishing odds.

The intriguing drift in odds of Hillfiger in the Brig R C R Hill Memorial Trophy saw the prices in the ring go topsy-turvy. Arabian Gold came in for a huge support on the basis of his impressive win in his last outing. Last start surprise Arrow In Auto Mode and Golden Rule were also well supported. Hillfiger became a nonstarter as she was withdrawn from the fray at the gates. Cash King showed the way as Arrow In Auto Mode was eased into second position closely followed by Arabian Gold and Golden Rule. Arrow In Auto Mode was pushed to take over the running rounding the final bend and the progeny of Razeen smoothly went ahead and had something to spare when Golden Rule came home with a rush. Arabian Gold ran way below expectations and was displaced from the third position by Gunpowder.

The concluding race of the day threw punters into confusion as Gun Salute, Hidden Destiny and Muqtadir were all well supported. The connections of Royal Fortune also hoped for a turnaround. The filly had whipped around at the jump in her previous essay. In the event, Hidden Destiny took charge of the proceedings from the start but the front running effort told on him as he weakened in the final furlong. Royal Fortune put in a strong effort to go clear and then held off a late rally by Muqtadir. Brilliance ran on from behind to displace Hidden Destiny from the third spot while Gun Salute ran below par.

The well backed Count Royal led all the way and easily won the 1100 metres Churchill Downs Plate, a race for horses rated 0 to 25. Failed favourite Splendid Dancer once again came in for spirited support but the filly was tardy at the start and was never in contention thereafter.
