Mysore to increase stake money for winter

The Mysore Race Club has decided to increase stake money by 12 ½ per cent for the ensuing winter season which starts on November 4. The stake money for the classics for next year’s main season has also been substantially enhanced. The Guineas will now offer guaranteed stake money of Rs 20 lakhs. The stake money also been hiked for Maharaja’s Cup, the Sprint Championship and most importantly for the Poonawalla Derby. .

Chairman of Mysore Race Club Kanthraj Urs said that the club was planning to build about 750 permanent stables. Already two new blocks are operational. The ventilation, the quality of construction has come in for all round praise. The professionals too have expressed happiness about the new facilities especially since the horses which arrived from Bangalore for the classics were accommodated in these newly built blocks. With the traffic on the road adjoining the race course increasing manifold, it would have been impossible for movement of horses even if Mysore Race Club had managed to retain the old block nearly a kilometer away from the race course. The race club has taken space close to the race course on rental to accommodate horses till such time the new blocks are completely built. The attendance per day at Mysore has also gone up making for increased turnover on the totes.

In the meanwhile, the Bangalore Turf Club is yet to sign the lease deed for new land at Chikkajala with the government. The club has sought time and it is very clear that they are not enthusiastic about the new venue considering the fact that the extent of land allotted does not meet the club’s expectation as also because of the huge costs involved in building the new infrastructure. Successive governments since the 60’s have been intending to shift the race course to the outskirts but somehow the governments have not lasted out to see out its plan.

When Chief Minister Yeddyurappa took a firm stand on the shifting of race course, he obviously did not believe in the jinx. Though he is a strong believer in astrology, he was adamant about the shift and got more aggressive at every attempt to resist the shift. Though the writ petition in High Court questioning the government’s power to allot tank bend land for purpose of racing is yet to come up, the political crisis may well bail out the beleaguered club if the revolt in the party results in any change of leadership.

The Bangalore Winter Season will start as scheduled on Friday, November 6. The 34-day season will initially have one day’s racing every alternate week. Once the season gets into full flow by the fag end of December, racing will be held on Friday and Saturday till the conclusion of the season. The Indian Turf Invitation Cup weekend races will be held at Mumbai in the first week of March.

As not many horses from Bangalore participated during the Mysore Regular Season which concluded on the third Sunday of October, there should be no shortfall of entries at least for the first week of racing in Bangalore. With copious rains, the track is in ideal condition for action to begin.
