Blink breaks the jinx with a win in feature

Michael Eshwer trained Blink’s consistency was finally rewarded when he recorded a win which had eluded him for a long time in the Karnataka Trophy, a seven furlong race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of Saturday’s races. Bourbon Bay looked outstanding in the race but he failed to put his best foot forward and was even relegated to the third place by late rallying Soberano. Jockey Suraj Narredu was in the limelight, booting home five winners while trainer Narayan Gowda had the most rewarding day of his career, with a treble.

Interestingly, Bourbon Bay has won thrice and all the times only over a sprint. Despite placing over a mile long trip, he hadn’t shown his mettle over seven furlongs. Also he has rarely performed well on firm going. This was the only question mark about the prospects of Bourbon Bay who otherwise looked cut above the rest. Jockey Suraj Narredu who replaced the injured Appu, who had a bad fall during morning workouts, took Blink on a start to finish mission and the progeny of Black Cash successfully stayed in front, ahead of the rest to win at nourishing odds. Bourbon Bay was handily placed to overhaul the front runner but was found lacking in vigor and even surrendered the second slot to Soberano.

Dominic’s Gift of Love just about scraped through in the1100 metres Sriharikota Plate, a race for maiden three-year olds, in a three horse finish. Bravo had the first run on the opponents but he failed to carry it past the wining post as Gift of Love came through the middle to snatch the initiative. Favorite Delight of Asia also came up with raking strides to close the gap but failed by a whisker in the end. Gift of Love’s run benefit is what tilted the race in her favour.

Saloni, who had run a forward race in her debut, won the 1400 metres Sangam Trophy, a race for maiden three year olds, with a start to finish mission, leaving the field stranded in the final furlong. Missoni looked like she is going to run the favourite close but ran out of steam in the final furlong. Golden Quest ran on to finish third.
The progeny of Placerville had disappointed in the past but he was expected to be in the thick of things considering his blazing workouts and the step up in distance. Topkapi traveled on tight leash and overhauled the rest without apparent effort and then went clear of the field to win pulling up. Topkapi should repeat on the basis of the form that he has shown in this race. Super Spear ran on to finish second best, ahead of the well supported Red Stone.

Suraj Narredu drove out Superb Style to victory in the Kollur Plate (Div I). The race could have gone the way of Tanzanite if a better jockey was guiding her fortunes. Apprentice Khurshad was handicapped by the absence of a whip even as he failed to maneuver a forward position. The progeny of Burden of Proof covered good ground in the straight to be an eye-catching third. The well backed Spark of Solitaire failed to pick up speed at any stage of the race and let down lot of expectation. Suraj had earlier won on Amar Prem in the lower division of the race with a start to finish mission. Favourite Special Charm chased the front runner in vain. Spark of Bronte ran in patches to finish third.

There was spirited betting on Puttanna trained Alianz who had no surface form. Nor for that matter exciting track work. Alianz raised hopes in the final furlong but the front running Spread A Smile managed to reach the safety of winning post without much bother. The lack of a forward run went against Alianz. Spread A Smile was the first of the three winners saddled by Narayan Gowda.

The well backed Zanzara, form Narayan Gowda’s stable, was guided to victory by apprentice B Sreekanth in the Tipture Plate (Div I). Zanzara came through with a good burst inside the final furlong and held comfortably to win form late finishing Thumping Victory and Damgood. Showhorse was a reluctant fourth. Narayan Gowda rounded off his tally with a treble as his other ward Born Beauty had no problem in winning the lower division of the race, leaving the field stranded with a furlong out, to provided jockey Suraj Narredu, his fifth winner of the day.
