Noble Prince wins in absorbing finish

Padmanabhan trained Noble Prince overcame all the disadvantages imposed by lack of a lung opener when beating Spark of Gold in the closing strides of the race to record an exciting win in the Chief Minister’s Trophy, a terms race for three-year olds and over, the main event of Saturday’s races. The well performed classic son of Placerville looked far form ready in the paddock parade as he weighed at least 10 to 15 kgs heavier than normal but this did not adversely affect his performance as he came up with a spirited performance in the final furlong to record his third straight win on the Bangalore track.

Mysore Derby winner Fleet Indian was the favourite to win though the terms of the race were not in his favour. He was also taking on seasoned performers. Classerville had his share of supporters though he too was short of a race run. Noble Prince was ignored in the betting ring as he weighed about 525 kgs and looked to be on the heavier side. However, being a champion that he is, once on the track, he was not going to let others win as he showed his true fighting qualities despite being off the bridle well before the final turn.

Corbett made the entire running followed in closed attendance by Fleet Indian, Conceptual, Classerville, Spark of Gold, Noble Prince and Arabian Knight. Corbett set a good pace which perhaps helped Noble Prince to warm up and helped the big made horse to win against the run of expectations. Fleet Indian, who chased Corbett into the straight, did not show his spark as he weakened to fade out of contention. Spark of Gold showed up on the wide outside and went past the front runner inside the distance post but Noble Prince who devoured ground in the final furlong; put his elegant neck ahead at the all important end. There was no doubting the class of Noble Prince who was a cut above the rest. It was not the weight which was the worrying factor but what prevented people from supporting him wholeheartedly was his poor run in the Stayers Cup and lack of a preparatory ran run.

The Chairman’s casting vote ensured the victory of M P Mahaesh trained Gampu who won the Kitty Bank Plate by default. Gampu led the field from the start with Man United in second position followed by Powerfuldreams on his inside. The order remained the same till the closing moments of the race when Man United emerged the better of the front runner to record a victory by a shade over one length. Powerfuldreams could not muster enough speed to overhaul Man United despite having all the chances. Closer home, Man United shifted in causing Powerfuldreams to be checked but jockey Samuel Fargeat cleverly made the interference look severe though it did not make a material difference to the result. Powerfuldreams went on to finish third.

Samuel Fargeat objected against Srinath who rode the winner for causing him a severe check which cost him a certain race. All the three professional stipes were of the view that though there was interference inside the final 100 metres, it did not make a material difference as Powerfuldreams was not going anywhere despite being in proximity with Man United the entire homestretch. When everyone was expected the objection to be overruled, came the bolt from the blue in the form of one of the Stewards Dr Srinivasa Gowda expressing the view that he was for upholding the objection. The other two Stewards, Kumaraswamy and Lokesh were against upholding the objection. It was left to Chairman to cast two votes to uphold the objection.

The decision must be considered as strange because by virtue of having finished third, Powerfuldreams was not going to get the race. The race was being awarded to rank outsider against a public favourite. The norm all along in Bangalore is when the interference does not make a material difference and when the objecting horse is placed third, it is invariably overruled. Since the professional stipes had been unanimous in their view, the same should have been upheld. The Chairman in his wisdom chose to go with his colleague and also cast the chairman’s vote as there was a tie to give the bookmakers a big bonus. The result of the Stewards action was that the jackpot pool was carried over. Samuel Fargeat had done a trick on the Stewards a la Vasant Shinde who was known to win objections even while being astride losing horses by his histrionics.

Irfan Ghatala trained Sunspirit recorded a smashing win in the Holenarsimpur Plate, a sprint race for maiden three year olds. Backed as a favourite on the basis of the brilliant workouts of this speedy son of Diffident, Sunspirit cantered home to win comfortably from Sweet Caroline and late rallying Valahak in an excellent time of one minute 13.89 seconds. The well supported Balas Glory made no show. Sunspirit surely has a bright future ahead of him.

Cielo Rey lived up to the promise of his last fluent win when recoding an encore in the mile long Malpe Plate. Jockey Ryan Marshall took Cielo Rey on a start to finish mission and the son of Burden of Proof successfully accomplished the mission, staving off the late rally of Star Assembly and Frozen Fire with a measure of comfort. Spark of Reverence was a suggestive fourth and his turn should come before long.

Trainer Arjun Mangalorkar had a nice priced double through Shotgunn and Mega Joy. Running for the first time after being gelded, Shotgunn showed immense promise as he left the field standing at the top of the straight to win in fine fashion. Kripa chased him without hope. On the evidence of this win, Shotgunn should repeat.

Arjun’s second win for day came through Mega Joy who won the Splendid Role Plate (Div I) quite comfortably from Stormy Affair. Moving well form the outside draw, Mega Joy held a forward position before going clear in the final furlong. Favourite Peacemaker finished strongly but could not muster enough speed to make a difference to the outcome. Rumour Proof won the lower division of the race in brilliant fashion. Rumour Proof led the charge on turning for home and sped away for an effortless win over late rallying Leopoldo and favourite True Impression. Rumour Proof can repeat as the filly has struck fine form.

After two below par efforts, Raptor Force was seen racing in earnest from the word `go’ and then stave off the valiant effort of favourite Enduring Star to record an overdue win.

Warren Singh trained Sunny Connexion won the day’s opener quite capably form Diamond Shower to set the tone for the day’s proceedings which generally favored the form horses.
