Edmondo leaves field stranded

Michael Eshwer trained Edmondo literally swept the rest off their feet to win the Chatrapathi Cup (Div I) which featured a truncated card of six events which were gone through shortly after the millennium’s longest eclipse on Friday. Edmondo showed so much speed that the rest of the opposition found it hard to match strides and when the pace quickened at the final turn, they were left gasping so much so that Edmondo was sighted a winner long way from home. Inspiring Trust put behind his disappointing run as a favourite to edge out favourite Enduring Star in the lower division of the race.

Lock And Load was made the firm favourite to win the race though the run of Burden of Proof had been campaigned over a longer trip and had run a mock race over a mile and quarter only last week. The seven furlong trip was bound to be sharp under such circumstances. Desert Rule had his share of supporters despite his disappointing run last time out. Jockey Silvester De Sousa had Edmondo take charge and then dictated the pace cleverly and left the field stranded at the top of the straight by exploiting the turn of foot that the son of Serious Spender possessed. Affirmed Crown made a belated rally to finish second ahead of Lock And Load who was a well beaten third.

Enduring Star, who had gone down narrowly over a mile long trip last week, was strongly fancied to make amends in the lower division of the race over a furlong short but the progeny of Diffident caught a tartar in Inspiring Trust who came through with a strong run in the final furlong to record a narrow win in the hands of De Sousa. The well backed Royal Amber had all the chances but he did not quicken at the all important end. He just about nosed out the late finishing Dante’s peak for the third spot. The victory on Inspiring Trust enabled De Sousa end the day with a hat-trick as he was also astride another winner Alpha Baby in the fourth race of the day.

Quite often one wonders at the courage and confidence of trainers and their supporters in backing down a horse to the exclusion of the rest despite no apparent surface form. Added to that is the fact that the jockey declared is of such inferior ability and capable of turning victory into defeat. Captain’s Lover was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the 1200 metres Aletenburg Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. De Sousa took Alpha Baby on a successful start to finish mission and by the time Captain’s Lover was pulled out of the rails to launch the assault, the front runner had established a winning lead. Sunny Spell ran on to finish third.

Jockey S John was able to get his act together in the nick of time to drive out favourite Optimus Prime to a narrow win over Portobello and First of a Legend in the 2000 metres W J Sibbritt Memorial Plate. Optimus Prime scraped home on sheer class. In a slow run race, John rode Optimus Prime in total restraint in the last position so much so that he was in danger of giving the front running horses, an unassailable lead. However, he reacted before things went out of hand and managed to get the progeny of Valid Concept a clear run in the final furlong to edge past his adversaries.

Darius Byramji trained Unleashed produced a sparkling run from behind to record an impressive win in the1100 metres January Plate, a race for maiden three year olds. Elite Land led all the way but failed to sustain the effort and was overhauled with ease by the eventual winner with a furlong out. Matias ran on to finish second ahead of Sky Glider even as the favourite disappeared without a trace.

Trainer Nityanand saddled his first winner of the season when Feelit Enjoyit thwarted off the late rally of Good Gift to record a comfortable win as a firm favourite. Ladzone who had his share of supporters, was never in contention. Aim To Win ran on without any target in mind to finish third.
