Mother’s Pride obliges in feature event

The alarming drift in the odds on Mother’s Pride was the only scare that the supporters of the favourite suffered as the six-year old mare won the 2000 metres Delhi Race Club Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of Friday’s races, with a measure of comfort form Cassandra and My Friend Paul.

Mother’s Pride class was never in doubt as she had done well against top quality company. The price drift was indeed surprising because the favourite looked better than the rest in the paddock parade. And also the others had some catching up to do before they could hope to overhaul Mother’s Pride.

Bottom weighted Cassandra was taken on a start to finish mission by jockey Chris Hayes with Scimitar, My Friend Paul and Talk of the Devil within striking distance of each other. Cassandra brought the field into view even as Scimitar and Talk of the Devil faded out of contention. The daughter of Burden of Proof Cassandra did not give easily even as jockey Silvester De Sousa was hard at work on Mother’s Pride. The favourite however put his neck in front with a furlong out and went on to win untroubled. Cassandra held on resolutely to the second spot ahead of My Friend Paul who closed with a rush.

Jockey James Doyle recorded his first win in Bangalore after coming close on a number of occasions. Those who continued to put faith on the young jockey would have reaped rich reward if they had dared to back Sky Diver in the 1400 metres Katil Plate. Sky Diver led from the start and did not allow favourite Delight of Asia to measure him up. Sky Diver returned a dividend of Rs 530 on a tenner! One Life To Love was a fair third while Elite Land ran without hope.

Trainer Sharat Kumar brought off a good touch on Voice of India in the Vijayanagar Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. The race had an open look about it though Southern Gladiator came in for spirited support. Noble Sacrifice, who was one of the market fancies, lost all her chances at the gate itself by being lethargic. Youre A Legend did all the front running but he could not prolong his stay in front for long as he was collared by Voice of India who sped away in the final furlong to record a facile win. Gustavo covered good ground to be a noteworthy second ahead of Youre A Legend.

Romance In The Air was unlucky to lose on the last occasion as the jockey had lost the stirrup at the final bend despite which the five year old mare had finished a noteworthy second to Ready To Mingle. Now backed spiritedly to make amends, the progeny of Pennine Ridge led all the way and checked in well clear of the late rallying Poetic whose lackluster effort was in keeping with the market trend.

Captain’s Lover had found one better last time out over six furlongs. Now running over an extended trip of seven furlongs, Captain’s Lover was kept a handy third as Party Tonite showed the way till entering the homestretch. Captain’s Lover shot ahead after a brief duel with the front runner and won capably. Duke of Edinburgh who drifted out of a straight course ran on to finish third.

Prasanna Kumar trained Spark of Bronte brought off a big upset in the Sivaganga Plate (Div I). Spark of Bronte got the better of front running Mercutio in the shadow of the post to record a narrow win.

The withdrawal of ante post favourite Wynn resulted in Sweet Timer being backed to the exclusion of his rivals. The favourite had no problems in disposing of his nearest challenger Spicy Star with ease. Captain’s Lover and Sweet Timer were both saddled by Prithviraj.
