Ticket To Ride wins Rangarajan Trophy in style

Darius Byramji trained Ticket To Ride sailed past favourite Alacrity in the closing strides of the race to win the S Rangarajan Memorial Trophy, a sprint race for horses 80 and above, the feature event of races held on Friday. The event held in memory of one of the most enthusiastic supporters of the sport, fittingly produced a close finish. Other than the main event, there was nothing much to write home about.

Barring Rare And Precious who had run against top class sprinters, the principal constants had relatively less credentials, having moved into this category after their previous winning efforts. Though Ticket To Ride had as much credentials as Alacrity, the latter enjoyed more support if only because of the fact that he had behind Becket who narrowly failed to record a dual Derby success subsequently. Rare And Precious was also well supported but the once rousing performer has seen his best days judging by the lackluster effort.

Jockey David Allan brought Alacrity from the outside draw to take a striking second position behind Celestial Son who set a fast pace. Ticket To Ride was not far behind and was traveling well within himself about three lengths adrift of the favourite. Rounding the final turn, Alacrity took charge and quickened for home but he could not shake off Ticket To Ride who gradually gained ascendancy to win by half a length. The verdict did not highlight the relative merits of the battling duo. Ticket To Ride won far easier than the verdict suggested. Phoenix Reach finished third in a cluster finish. Rare And Precious was not sighted. The winner clocked a smart time of one minute 12.6 seconds.

Trainer Ganapathy had a fruitful day with a treble. The gold and brown brigade which used to dominate racing in Bangalore is not the same force that it was hardly two years ago. Grand Topaz won the Kumta Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category, quite easily, circling the field at the final turn and then sailing clear of favorite Enduring Speed who chased without hope. Jockey Prakash was only required to do the steering job. Fire Amber was another winner ridden by Prakash who had only Tirolino for company till the final furlong before going clear to record a decisive win.

Ruby Legend was another winner saddled by Ganapathy. Ruby Legend who hadn’t been exploited to advantage thus far, encountered stiff resistance from Shot of Gold but jockey Vinod Shinde managed to get the lesser fancied runner to prevail in the end. Favourite Magnifique found foot when the race had been settled.

Jockey Suraj Narredu who is due to get married on Wednesday, February 24, recoded his mandatory double through Couleur Rouge and Advantage Logan. Couleur Rouge fought a stiff battle with the front running favourite Astounding Gallop and surged ahead in the end to spare a neck at the finish in the Madhavnagar Plate (Div I).

Advantage Logan was backed to the exclusion of his rivals and he was the only ante post favourite to win during the eight event card. Advantage Logan who was recording the third win of the season encountered no resistance from his opponents as he checked in by a widening margin of seven lengths. Sunny Spell ran on to be a faraway second.

Love Conquers All floored the opposition in the lower division of the Madhavnagar Plate, a race for maiden three-year olds, with a powerful run in the final furlong. Favourite Saddle Chief was flat footed by the eventual winner. Mythos who walked out of the gate, improved remarkably to get the better of Saddle Chief close home to snatch the runner up berth.

Spark of Jewel attracted tons of money to end up as a favourite from a higher quote and true to the support that she received, the progeny of Warrshan put in a fast run from the start to win pulling up from Saratoga. Feelit Enjoyit who began as the favourite could not pose a threat to the front runners and even lost the third spot to Sandalwood Star who finished on purposefully after being outpaced in the early part of the race.
