Soberano necks out Star Wave in feature

Soberano was driven out to a narrow win over Star Wave in the RWITC Trophy, a seven furlong race for horses rated 80 and above, which featured Saturday’s races. Jockey Suraj Narredu showed good tactical acumen in boxing Star Wave for a while before kicking clear. By the time Prakash pulled Star Wave out and made his challenge, the front runner had established a winning lead.

Soberano was well fancied to win along with Star Wave. Western Command set the pace with Mighty Heart in close attendance while Star Wave was settled along the rails with Soberano on his outside. Rounding the final turn, Prakash should have moved out to get a clear passage but he chose to stay behind the tiring Western Command and Mighty Heart who were going no where. In the meanwhile, Suraj had Soberano race alongside Star Wave, cramping her for room which made a difference to the outcome. Either Prakash has lost his reflexes or he was simply not keen to force an issue.

Warren Singh trained Stone of Destiny won against the run of expectations when the progeny of Major Impact pulled off a big upset in the 1400 metres Dashmesh Stud Plate at the expense of Caprioska and Classical Dancer. Own Voice began as a favourite but his price drifted out so badly by race time that he was not expected to figure at the finish going by the market trend. And quite expectedly, he finished down the field, showing a complete reversal of form which is something one has come to expect form a stable which once was known for consistency of performance but appears to be clueless now. Caprioska led all the way only to be beaten in the shadow of the post by Stone of Destiny. Classical Dancer came to essay a strong challenge on the outside of Classical Dancer but was pushed out a bit. Jockey Suraj Narredu lost his reins momentarily and he stopped riding. And by the time he regained his reins and made his move towards the rails, the horse had lost all possible chances.

There was another shocker from trainer Warren Singh whose Western Palace who had run down the field as a favourite only in his previous outing, recorded a resolute win over Dark Horse in the amazing Grey Plate at nourishing odds. The inconsistency of Western Palace was too glaring to be missed and the Stipes have ordered an enquiry into the improved performance of Western Palace. The trainer was complaining that the jockey on the previous occasion had not allowed the horse to run to its potential. One has to wait and see what stand the authorities are going to take.

Sparklingadventure recorded a hat-trick of wins when he opened up a big lead from the start and held on to win from late rallying Voice of India. Milagro and Sparklingadventure broke away form the rest from the word `go’, with the latter smoothly taking over the running at the top of the straight. Sparklingadventure had a big lead inside the final furlong and this held him in good stead as Voice of India found foot late and came up with a big charge. Luckynumberslevin too finished on but was a poor third.

Arjun Mangalorkar’s Moorva Goodtime displaced Stormyred as the favourite in the Savadatti Plate (Div I), a race for maiden three-year olds. However, her supporters began to despair when the filly started swishing her tail en route to the starting gates. In the race itself, the filly did not show enthusiasm though she covered good ground to finish on the frame. Bugatti showed lot of speed to lead all the way followed by Fling Tricolour only to be pressed hard by Stormyred close home. The latter managed to surge ahead in sight of the winning of the post. Supremacy had no problems in going into an unassailable lead with a furlong out and win comfortably from Sky Rider who finished on purposefully to take the second spot.

Sharat Kumar’s Southern King was backed down spiritedly and he readily justified the enthusiasm of his connections with a late stretch run to win the Doddaballapur Plate from Persian Princess and God’s Gift. Fancied Ladzone was withdrawn from the fray at the gates.

Strong Minded held off the spirited bid of favourite Born Beauty to win the A V R Char Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 40 to 65 in the hands of jockey Srinath. Paint Me red bolted from the gates while being loaded and held up the proceedings for a long while. Sunnyland ran on to be third ahead of late rallying Hidalgo who can be a force to reckon with if he is asked to tackle a longish trip than the six furlongs that he was essaying.

In the day’s other action, favourite Snow Peaks flopped badly and Sher Dil came from behind to win from I Wanna Dance to lift the Gumbaz Trophy at nourishing odds.
