Cavalry Charge romps home in feature

These days it is increasingly becoming difficult to predict the way the horses sporting the famous colours of white and black V are going to run. Inconsistency in pattern of running is becoming too glaring for comfort. Cavalry Charge had gone down rather tamely after the drift in odds as a favourite in his previous outing but this time out, the strong support in the ring was indicative of the shape of things to come. The progeny of Burden of Proof hit the front from the word `go’ and was never headed as he romped home to a fine victory in the 2000 metres Delhi Race Club Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the main event of races held on Friday. Also joining this category of horses was Camorra who had not true to her potential in her previous outing but this time, showed remarkable alacrity and zest when staving off the challenge of Flame Back.

The Delhi Race Club Trophy saw Cavalry Charge displace Topkapi as the favourite. The latter had run twice during the season and had done nothing of note but he was nevertheless supported to win as Cavalry Charge had let down as a favourite over the same distance. Jockey Chris Hayes took Cavalry Charge on a start to finish mission and though Topkapi tried hard to catch up with the front runner after the final turn, he found the favourite unrelenting. Topkapi was a tame second ahead of Oban.
The Bangalore Turf Club can be expected to do crazy things. Rains which greeted the runners as they left the paddock, intensified as the horses were being loaded for the start for the last race. However, the horses were pulled out of the gates and made to get drenched in the heavy rain for nearly half an hour. The conditions were bad and it would have been wise to cancel the last race but the BTC authorities were unwilling to do this as this would mean loss of revenue due to refund of money bet through the totalisator pools. Each of the races in Bangalore grosses close to Rs 1 crore and the club would have lost about Rs 10 lakhs as its income. For this the club was prepared to let the horses and the jockeys endanger themselves and also compromise the money of the betting public which would have backed before the situation turned worse. The jockeys would surely have been shivering because as someone put cynically, they are not used to taking even a cold water bath! The race was started after rains relented but the jockeys rode as if their hands were frozen. It was no surprise that Sundance Kid who found himself in front won at the expense of Spark of Knight and Chantilly Jewel. Two market fancies Vayomi and Not Not Seven were not sighted. Probably if the Stipes were to critically look into the performance of the jockeys, they may have ended up hauling up most of the jockeys before the Stewards for their apparent lack of efforts!

Camorra had finished down the field in her last outing and had faded out from the scene after a front running effort. However, this time, Camorra was not inclined to give up and ran on resolutely to contain the challenge of late rallying Flame Back in the 1400 metres A V R Char Memorial Cup (Div II), a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Gunpowder who was installed the favourite, was never in the hunt and possibly he may have overreached himself and may find winning in this category tough. Flame Back, though consistent, has been finding the winning post elusive. Sunstone broke the jinx in the upper division of the race. After three runner-up efforts during the season, Sunstone produced a winning gallop, getting past the front running Six Gun Smith to win with a measure of comfort. Gluteus Maximus, who was strongly fancied on the basis of his impressive last start win, ran below part. Elusive Speed who was bidding for a hat-trick was stranded at the gates and lost all his chances.

Trainer Ganapathy finally saddled a well backed winner in Star Marquess in the 1400 metres Katil Plate, a race for maiden three year olds. Backed to the exclusion of his rivals, the got abroad colt tracked Field Marshall and Waikato who set a fast clip and then steadily measured the front runners and won by a widening margin of five lengths over Field Marshall. Arabian Gold ran on from behind to finish third.
Satish Narredu’s Amiable Lady was the second horse from his yard to bid for hat-trick on the day same day but she failed narrowly as Saratoga finished on strongly to get the measure of the favourite in the dying moments of the race. Rubellite ran on from behind to finish third.

Arjun Mangalorkar’s Florida, who was making a belated debut, toyed with the opposition when winning the 1100 metres Jayanagar Plate by over seven lengths. Cool Whistle was second ahead of Sachimore.

In the day’s other action, Dominic trained Vayuputra obliged at nourishing odds in the 1400 metres Sivaganga Plate. Vayuputra tracked Give Me The Money into the straight before being driven out to get past the front runner and win with a measure of comfort. Golden Dixie ran into money when placing third. The victory of Vayuputra and Saratoga provided the trainer-jockey combination of Dominic and P S Chouhan a double for the day.
