David Allan guides Magnitude to land the spoils

David Allan rode a splendid race on Magnitude to guide the Ganapathy trainee to a fine victory in the Governor’s Trophy, the feature event of Saturday’s races. The power packed riding by David Allan enabled Magnitude to stave off the strong challenge essayed by Severstahl in the mile long terms event. Favourite Castro was not in the race right from the word `go’

Castro who was a late rallying second as a favourite to Severstahl was once again backed to the exclusion of his rivals in the hope that over the extended trip, he would make amends for his last start failure. Severstahl, who had beaten him, was running in the race without penalty but still he was quoted at generous odds. So was Magnitude who had run a suggestive fourth to Midtown Magic in his last essay.
Much to the chagrin of race goers, Castro took a lethargic start and stayed put to end up a dismal last. Magnomical was the pace setter followed by No Doubt, Saratoga Spring, Severstahl, Magnitude, Current Ray and Castro. Saratoga Spring had the first run on his opponents as the field straightened for the home stretch with Magnitude improving places along the rails on the inside of No Doubt while Severstahl loomed large on the wide outside. Current Ray and Castro were beaten causes well before the race came on the boil. Magnitude picked up speed under the strong driving finish of Allan and thwarted the spirited bid of Severstahl who at one stage threatened to overhaul the eventual winner. Magnitude stretched out strongly to win by a shade less than a length while Saratoga Spring ran on to finish third.

For the first time in the season, the race for first season runners dominated the proceedings with as many as four races featured for three year olds. Apart from the Governor’s Cup, the Infants Plate, a sprint race for three year olds was inundated by so many entries that the club could make three divisions out of it. The rush was also perhaps because there is a break of one week due to running of the Invitation Cup weekend races at Mumbai. There are just six days left to be run during the season. Incidentally all the three divisions turned out to be one-sided contests.
Irfan Ghatala trained Hillsboro was backed to the exclusion of his rivals in the Infants Plate (Div I) and the favouritism was justified as the progeny of Mr Mellon checked in well clear of Mi Amor and Sunday Cruz. Virtually it was a procession headed by the favourite. Another Ghatala trainee Hllfiger literally toyed with the opposition while winning the Infants Plate (Div II) in great style. Chemin De Fer came up with an eye catching run from way behind to finish a suggestive second. Her turn should come soon. The Infants Plate (Div III) saw Forever Glory too go into the race as a firm favourite but the filly was unable to match strides with Ability who won start to finish untroubled. Will Still ran on from behind to edge out Rappadan Glory from the third spot.

The lesser fancied Rich Radiant from trainer Prithviraj’s yard finished with a powerful run to just about nose out Yamas in the 2000 metres Bhagamandala Plate. Yamas shaped like a winner when he went into a useful lead with a furlong out as Rich Radiant had some leeway to cover but the latter picked up speed in nick of time to land the spoils Allez Vite who was bidding for a hat trick changed course from outside to the rails and made a strong challenge, but could only finish third.
Puttanna trained Pritvi was backed down spiritedly and as it happens with some of them, he was seen in serious light, swamping the opposition in the 1400 metres Mudabidri Plate. Sun Gold was a faraway second while I Fancy You was not sighted when the winner crossed the winning post.

Kingdomofdreams had it easy in the Varada Trophy, a six furlong race for horses rated 60 to 85. After racing a handy third as Another Destiny made the pace, Kingdomofdreams slipped into the lead and sped away from the late rallying favourite Corleone.

Super Surprise was backed down spiritedly in the Ramnagar Plate though close to race time, Ideal Match once again ended up as the favourite. In the event, Super Surprise who shot into the lead inside the final 300 metres won with a great measure of comfort from Silver Court and Inspirator who found foot long after the race was in the safe keeping of the eventual winner. Ideal Match did not raise any sort of a gallop and finished dismally.
