Mighty Heart records encore in style

Neil Darashah trained Mighty Heart who has bounced back to top form after a series of listless performances recorded an encore in style while claiming the Narasimharaja Cup, a seven furlongs race for horses rated 80 and above, the main event of a long card of 10 events that were gone through on Saturday. Trainer Sharat Kumar was in limelight as his horses struck form against the run of expectation, boosted by the right money they attracted as he saddled a well-priced treble.

Clear Mandate and Flaming Lamborgini were the market fancies as they had the form to recommend their credentials. The latter lost support close to race time and it was clear that he may not be in serious business as Flaming Lamborgini has always produced his best when least fancied. Clean Mandate led the field into the straight with Ohiyesa and Mighty Heart in close attendance. Jockey Appu goaded Mighty Heart to get past the front runners with a furlong out and then skipped away from Ohiyesa to record a comfortable win. Tanzanite ran on to finish third while the fancied duo was not spotted at the busy end, with Flaming Lamborgini out of contention well before the final turn.

Sans Craintes Stud Farm’s Midtown who covered one season before succumbing to a twisted colic, has had several first start winners but he had something special in the form of Touching The Town who scorched the turf while recording the most impressive win by a first season runner. The filly shot off from the gates in brilliant fashion and despite being eased up with more than 100 metres left in the race, slocked a speedy time of one minute 7 seconds. Had John who carried a overweight of two kgs on the filly stretched her, she could well have set a new mark for the 1100 metres trip. No Doubt was eight lengths adrift second ahead of Caraway. The Padmanabhan trainee Touching The Town is surely a star in the making. Favourite Shahraan won the upper division of the Savadatti Plate in a relatively slower timing from Intrigue who put in a belated noteworthy effort.

Rip Van Winkle had been a pace setter when stablemate Unleashed had won in his last outing. Now backed to the exclusion of the rest in the 1600 metres Ilkal Plate, Suraj Narredu had the favourite dictate the pace all the way and survived a scare from Native Talent who even went ahead with a furlong out. Rip Van Winkle fought back to wrest the lead once again and land the spoils. Simply Phenomenal was third while The Senator who has never shown his mettle over a mile was a tame fourth.
Lowndes Square was a strong favourite who let down his supporters in the Dashmesh Stud Plate (Div I). Chintz attempted runaway tactics but started to falter on turning for home. Hatsuhana came into strong contention with a powerful run inside the final 300 metres but he was beaten close home by the well fancied What A Friend. Lowndes Square who was prominent till measured by the winner and runner up was a tame third. Dominic’s Rugged Beauty led all the way and won the lower division of the race with comfort from Alpha Baby and Star Presence. Favourite Brunetta, who led for a while, was not spotted at the busy end.

Sharat Kumar’s Rubellite who had been well waited with for a touch, came in for some inspired support by the people in the know and landed the spoils in the Amazing Grey Plate over seven furlongs. Rubellite was strongly ridden out to win by jockey Christopher who makes an intermittent appearance at the race course. The Dawn made a late rally to be a good second ahead of I Fancy You while Foresight who finished fourth could have made a difference to the outcome of the result with better saddle assistance than the one provided by apprentice Pradeep.

Wild Nexus was the on money favourite to win the 1200 metres Gumbaz Trophy but he was withdrawn from the fray before the horses came to the paddock as he was reportedly lame. Sun Doro got all the support by default but he was withdrawn at the gates as he threw tantrums and possibly hurt himself. There was no clear favourite though Mitraya ended up as a favourite in the belief that he would be the only trier in the race as the rest in the field were not mentally prepared to win due to unexpected development of two favourites being pulled out just before the start. Mitraya raced in earnest but Its My Party proved too superior and won quite easily.
Brave Cat was backed down spiritedly to win the Doddaballapur Plate (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest category. Jockey John had to drive out the favourite to win from Hamsafar and Ideal Match. The well backed Angel Queen won the lower division of the race where favourite Absence burst his blood vessels and faded out from the reckoning well before the race came on the boil. Silver Court rallied late to finish a suggestive second.
