Class Apart wins Sprinters Million with ease

Barring classics, it is rare to see a challenger from Mumbai take part in a graded race in Bangalore and Class Apart belonged to that rare brigade. Dallas Todywalla trained Class Apart came all the way from Mumbai because there was not much scope for a sprinter during the rest of the season as the millions for three-year olds from now onwards will be over longer trips and the Gr 3 P Dayanand Pai and P Satish Pai Bangalore Winter Million was an ideal race especially considering the fact that the local three year olds are yet to show great promise. The progeny of Burden of Proof, Class Apart justified the optimism of the connections to bring him all the way from Mumbai as he led from the start and easily held off the challenge of Preordained to land the rich prize.

There were just six runners in the fray and three of them, Class Apart, Preordained and Araceli were all backed with enthusiasm, with the first named going into the race as a firm favourite. Jockey Chris Hayes took the speedy Class Apart on a start to finish mission, with Preordained in chase followed by Araceli and the rest. Class Apart travelled well within herself and skipped away from Preordained in the final furlong to win with a measure of comfort. Araceli lost pace to bow out of contention when the race came on the boil. Own Empire moved strongly from behind to finish third.

Two better quality sprinters were seen in action in the Talakaveri Plate (Div II), a race for maiden three year olds. The speedy daughter of Ivan Denisovich, Loveatfirstsight was backed down spiritedly, with the odds on At The Helm expanding. Loveatfirstsight led the field with At The Helm in hot pursuit with the rest totally proving a mismatch. Though Loveatfirstsight drifted out in the final furlong, she still proved good enough to win by a shade less than two lengths. Win Again won the upper division of the race in emphatic fashion. The speedy daughter of Sussex left the field standing to win by a widening margin of four lengths over Colour of Money in a fractionally slower timing than the one clocked by Loveatfirstsight. There was solid support for Rhythmic Dancer but the filly was outpaced from the start and finished way down the field.

The race track has never been as bad as it has been this year. The short sighted policy of the Managing Committee may also have had a bearing as the usual quantum of tan bark is not being supplemented. The water sprinkler too is not being used and watering is done by the hose pipe which has also resulted in watering being uneven. Reportedly, the club is wary of spending money for its core activity which is racing but does not hesitate to host a party for members unmindful of the cost. Surely the club continues to have lopsided priorities. The track at most places is loose and horses are finding it difficult to get a firm foothold especially in the area close to the rails.

Coming back to racing, Carla bounced back to winning form in great style in the 120 metres Shravanabelagola Plate (Div I). Considering the fact that Carla was racing in a race meant for horses in the 40 to 65 bracket, she was a cinch but the progeny of Burden of Proof has never been a model of consistency as evidenced by her poor run at Mysore and Hyderabad. She was also treated for a wind problem but Carla showed no discomfort when thrashing the field pointless by nine lengths in a good timing of one minute 13.09 seconds. Lad Fury, who was strongly fancied, found the opponent too classy for comfort. Carla can maintain the winning streak if her trainer is able to keep her form going.

M P Mahaesh trained Crown Vision won the lower division of the race as jockey Suraj Narredu drove out the favourite strongly to contain the challenge of late rallying Swift Star who is a known bleeder. Juno too flashed on the scene late to snatch the third spot ahead of Super Gold.

Padmanabhan trained Con Artiste brought off a big upset in the 1600 metres Bull Temple Trophy. The daughter of Hurricane State was definitely not winning out of turn but since she had not performed well over a mile, her claims were ignored in the betting ring as One Life To Love came in for spirited support. In the event, Gazaki who was bidding for a hat-trick, made a strong claim for the cup by taking charge from a handy second position and broke clear to shape like a winner. However, the filly slackened in the closing stages of the race and Con Artiste closed with a rush to surge ahead in the final strides of the race. Indian Bolt too showed some positive intent when finishing third.

Apprentice jockey Noornabi drove out Enduring Speed for his maiden success over Youre Stunning in the Classic Story Plate (Div I). Youre Stunning came in for strong support but the favourite found the winner too speedy for comfort. Youre Stunning also returned lame with a sprained tendon. Sharat Kumar’s Tern Me On recorded an encore in the lower division of the race in the hands of jockey John. Trillion Win was the best of the beaten brigade.

Five year old gelding Lampon finally came out of the maidens rank, winning the 1400 metres Manipal Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Allegro, Jewel Lady and Lampon were all fancied to win by their respective connections but Lampon proved too good against a very mediocre lot of horses.
