Advantage Logan maintains amazing consistency

Irfan Ghatala trained Advantage Logan maintained his amazing consistency by recording his fifth win from seven outings on Saturday. The Capricorn Stud Farm bred Advantage Logan held off the challenge of 10 other contestants en route to victory in the 1400 metres Karnataka Sub-Area Cup, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of the day.

The race had an open look about it, with about half a dozen horses being fancied by their respective connections to pull it off. Top weighted Atlantus came in for more support than the rest despite apprentice Chethana being declared to ride the five-year old gelding but the jockey was not up to the task of delivering the goods as the favourite lost a forward position within the first two furlongs and then was brought wide to essay his challenge. Atlantus was a well beaten fourth. Caprioska did all the front running before being overhauled in the final furlong by Advantage Logan who quickened for home with a resolute effort. Magnanimity closed with a rush but he did not accelerate enough to get the measure of the lesser fancied runner. Lock And Load came up with raking strides when the race was well sewn up by the front runner. He deserves following. The speedy Spot On was unable to head the field at any stage of the race.

Rezoom was backed to the exclusion of his rivals in the 1800 metres Richelieu Plate but the progeny of Brave Act warmed up too late for comfort. Srinath took Modern Art on a start to finish mission and the four year old filly looked like she would steal the race from the rest as the others were finding it difficult to find foot. Ballibay who was running with blinkers for the first time was a big let down, with jockey C Alford unable to have any control on his horse and he was a beaten cause well before the race came on the boil. Sunny’s Secret angled in with a powerful run from the penultimate position and shot through inside the final 100 metres to record a big upset. Modern Art held off the belated challenge of Rezoom. Srinath had a fall as Modern Art appeared to have ducked passing the 1800 metres marker. Srinath reportedly suffered a hairline fracture near his ankle and he is expected to be out of action for at least four weeks.

Deep Blue Sky received one sided support to win the 1800 metres Skyline Plate but the favourite had to be ridden out fully to get the measure of Yamas in the final stride at the end of an eventful start to the race. Deep Blue Sky was reported to have splayed one of his shoes which was noticed before the horses were loaded. Trainer Satish Narredu was summoned to the starting gates and after the needful was done, the race started about 15 minutes behind schedule. Yamas took over the running within the first furlong and shaped to record an encore but the favourite finished on powerfully to get the nod by a whisker. Southern King made a late rally to finish third. Ganapathy’s Smart Ways was expected to be in the thick of things as the extended trip suited his pedigree but after being prominent till entering the homestretch, he packed up too quickly for comfort.

Trainer Padmanabhan broke the jinx when he saddled the first winner from his lot of three-year old horses as Kilimanjaro obliged at nourishing odds in the hands of lesser known Ranjeet Singh. Count Royal was strongly favored to win but the favourite showed no spark at any stage of the race after being prominent till the final turn. Recharged shaped to cause an upset with a front running effort but Kilimanjaro came through the centre of the track to edge past the front runner close home. Sky Marshall graced the rear till the home stretch, came wide at the final bend but finished powerfully. He was shy by a long neck at the finish. Partagas was a poor third.

With most horses in the fray not making any impression, first timer Sun Salvador was backed down to strong favoritism as the only horse expected to pose a challenge, Cool Mover did not impress in the paddock parade. Sun Salvador had no problem in staying clear of Matias. The challenge for the favourite came from unexpected quarters as Alisa who was a failed favourite, posed a stiff challenge inside the final furlong before fading out.

Sriram Komandur led in a winner after a longish gap as Mystere brought off a big upset in the 1400 metres Mauritius Pearl Plate (Div I). Amazer was considered unbeatable but the favourite, after shaping to overhaul front running Mystere weakened to finish second. Imran Chisty rode out the winner vigorously. Cash Is King, who was hemmed up along the rails, had too much leeway to cover and by the time he was pulled out and asked to stretch out, the race was beyond his grasp. Puttanna who saddled Amazer however led in the winner of the lower division of the race as Sabari got the better of well backed Yes We Can in the closing stages of the race. Fancied Magnifique put in a dismal performance.

Chisty who had earlier in the day won on Sunny’s Secret completed a treble for the day as he had an arm chair ride to victory on Tarun Thimmaiah trained Chronicle in the 1200 metres New Market Plate, a race for horses rated 0 to 25. Chronicle, who hadn’t run for quite some time, looked outstanding in the paddock and the four-year old progeny of Burden of Proof led all the way and checked in well clear without the jockey having to move a muscle. Smart Cooky ran on to be second.
