Becket shows sparkling acceleration

On sheer weight of performance, Padmanabhan trained Becket was unbeatable in the Gr 3 Chief Justice’s Cup, the feature event of Saturday. The race in the past had seen giants of Indian racing produce some exhilarating stuff. The Sohna Stud Farm bred Becket lived up to expectations of belonging to the elite league by the weight of his performance. What contributed an element of drama to the proceedings was the fact that the son of Hawk Wing was made to cover too much ground in the straight. Despite going into the race without any solid preparation, Becket stretched out magnificently to edge out Mysore Derby winner Fleet Indian close home. Spark of Gold ran on to be third while the hyped up Onassis continued his dismal run.

Jockey Zervan on Cotswold Arms upset the rhythm of the race by bolting to the front and established a distance lead over his nearest pursuer Aristos while Fleet Indian raced in the third position while Becket was held quite far back. Approaching the final bend, jockey Ryan Marshal pushed Aristos to take over the running with Srinath on Fleet Indian improving his position quickly while Suraj Narredu preferred to wait longer than expected. Sprint Star who was expected to figure at the finish, graced the wrong end and failed to show sparkle at any stage of the race.

Fleet Indian gradually covered the leeway on Aristos in the straight while Becket had considerable ground to cover. However, Becket showed sparkling acceleration to get the better of Fleet Indian in the shadow of the post to win with a measure of comfort. If the supporters of Becket felt that the favourite may fall short considering the distance that he had to cover in the straight, they may have been justified. But being a champion that he is, Becket overcame all the problems in great style. With the benefit of this race run, Becket should prove too good in the Maharaja’s Cup if his trainer elects to campaign the champion in that richly endowed race.

Shotgunn was universally expected to win the Regency Stud Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 60 to 85, as he was the form horse. Red Renegade was a better quality horse but this son of Placerville had bled in the past and had missed action for a considerably long period of time and as such, he was not enthusiastically supported as there was an element of risk in backing such a horse. Jockey Srinath took Red Renegade on a start to finish mission and the horse which has a high cruising speed, had a considerable break over the rest, with favourite Shotgunn held up far behind. Red Renegade quickened for home but considerably slowed down in the final stages of the race. Shotgunn was pulled out from the rails to get a clear ground in the final furlong, and the son of Onatrio devoured ground but fell short narrowly. Bucephalas ran on strongly from behind to edge out Flaming Lamborgini from the third spot.

Tanzanite was the betting rage in the lower division of the Regency Stud Plate. Chintz led all the way with Greens in hot pursuit while Tanzanite and Still Will were content to race in mid group as their jockeys preferred to wait for opportune time. Chintz refused to budge from his position in front even as Greens tried her best and then tired out. Tanzanite got a smooth run along the inside, accelerated quickly and got past Chintz. Still Will closed with a rush but he could not master the front runner who held by a diminishing margin of a long neck.

Vittal Deshmukh trained Rapture of Victory had been a rousing performer back home at Hyderabad. He was gelded in the month of February and had the benefit of a mock race. He was backed with conviction to win the M Ali Asker Memorial Trophy (Div I). Srinath on Flying Tricolour bolted to the front along with Rosemead and went at such a pace that the second favourite was bound to find reserves running out in the final stages of the race. Rapture of Victory who was none to well placed till turning for home, came up with a big run and whizzed past the tiring Flying Tricolour to record a handsome win. Braavo made a late rally to advertise his readiness to strike next time out.

Gift of Love came up with a spirited run from behind to edge past favourite Moves Goodenough in the dying moments of the race to record a win at lucrative odds in the lower division of the M Ali Asker Memorial Trophy. Magic Million who came in for sustained support in the ring, was a beaten horse well before the race came on the boil. Soviet Me3lody came from way behind to finish third.

Ice Bound and Crown Empress had finished close up in their last clash and they deservedly enjoyed support in the ring ahead of North Cape in the Tudor Jet Plate, a seven furlong race for three-year old maidens. Crown Empress led all the way expect at the all important end as Ice Bound finished powerfully snatching the verdict in the concluding moments of the race. Lambourn ran on to be third while North Cape was outpaced from the start and was no where to be sighted.

Satish Narredu trained Swift Star proved too good in the 1100 metres Camineto Plate (Div I), a race for maiden three year olds. Swift Star left the field stranded at the top of the straight to win as he pleased from One For The Money who was the only one who went in chase of the favourite in earnest. Sky Glider was a faraway third. Balmoral Castle was backed to the exclusion of her rivals in the lower division of the race but the race was won by rank outsider A Move To Remember who won at fancy odds. For the record, Morova Goodtime finished second best ahead of a well beaten Balmoral Castle.

Failed favourite Son of the Soil obliged in the 1800 metres Sweet Memories Plate in the hands of jockey Malesh Narredu who was winning a race after a very long interval. Son of the Soil took over the proceedings after the field settled down for the nine furlong race and then was driven out to contain the challenge of A Run To Remember and the late rallying favourite Persian Princess. Party Tonite steadily lost supporters in the ring and ran as per market expectation while Persian Princess who replaced the former as the favourite, made a futile effort to justify an inspired touch.

Dance N Celebrate had better credentials than Gluteus Maximus in the seven furlongs Ramkirpal Plate but the latter came in for some sustained support in the ring to end up as favourite. Jockey Stephane Ladjad had Dance N Celebrate take charge from the outside draw with a steady run and the second favourite skipped away from the rest to record an emphatic win. Golden Quest and Super Gold occupied the next two slots while Gluteus Maximus was surveying the race from behind.
