Sirono wins Sprinters Million in a thriller

The Capricorn Stud Farm bred Sirono won the Gr 3 Deccan Chronicle Juvenile Sprinters Million, the feature event of Sunday’s races in a thriller from Carla. The winner clocked a fast time of one minute 12.02 seconds. The day’s races did not run kindly for punters as just one strongly backed favourite obliged in a card of nine events.

The bookmakers’ perception did not match the ground realities. Carla and Sirono had both recorded impressive wins in their previous runs and were closely matched in terms of performance and timing achieved. However, Carla came in for one sided support, with Sirono running at a much higher price than warranted. In the event, the Prithviraj trained Sirono fought a thriller with Carla for the entire length of the straight before getting the nod in the closing stride of the race. The race also heralded the emergence of these two horses as sprinters to reckon with.

Vijay Damini set a fast pace as the field set out for the six furlong trip, with Carla and Sirono in hot pursuit while the rest were struggling for pace. Rounding the final bend, Imran Chisty pushed Carla to take charge with Sirono looming large on the outside. Sirono appeared to have had the measure of Carla with about 100 metres to go but the latter fought back and stretched the battle to the final stride of the race.. Vijay Damini ran on to finish third ahead of Walnut Creek. Both these horses will undoubtedly bag their share of races back home at Hyderabad.

Barring Aztec Gold who won the concluding race of the day in an emphatic fashion, the rest of the races were dominated by lesser fancied runners. The ante post favourite Sunspirit was withdrawn from the fray just before the horses were to arrive at the paddock and Aztec Gold was backed down to cramped odds. Aztec Gold who had recorded a smashing win in his last outing was not hard pressed to win in a smart time of one minute 26.64 seconds with a front running effort. Yas Marina gave a chase to the favourite without hope. The timings recorded during the day’s races were on the faster stride as the going was firm.

All the cooperation from the contestants in the day’s opener, the Honeday Plate (Div II) was not enough to ensure the victory of favourite Legend Reborn who was backed down as a strong favourite. Legend Reborn had all the chances but was overhauled by Stud Muffin whose jockey B Sreekanth was too daring for comfort. The horse won despite lack of effort on his part. Sreekanth is a young jockey who is also an engineering student. It was distressing to see him keep Stud Muffin in detached last position. A huge gap opened along the inside and Stud Muffin covered places all by himself and necked out the favourite. If he had lost the race, Sreekanth would surely have been entitled to a long holiday. It is time Sreekanth is drilled the virtues of keeping a straight course. There were others in the race who also needed to be pulled up and one hopes the Stipes put some fear in these daring professionals.

The upper division of the Honeyday Plate also went the way of rank outsider Balas Glory. Here too, Sweet Performer was the betting rage but the favourite was flat footed as Balas Glory who was running after a longish interval, cruised into the lead and went away for an effortless win. Celestina who led from the start, packed up in the straight to finish last. The filly reportedly bled.

In another eventful race, Dolce Vino slammed the opposition in the R S Nagendra Kumar Memorial Trophy (Div Ii). Even before ante post favourite Captain’s Lover was withdrawn from the fray; Dramatic Dancer had come in for a monstrous touch to end up as a firm favourite. Dramatic Dancer raced fiercely from the inside draw but could not get a clear run as the field in front had slowed down. Sreekanth attempted to get a clear run by trying to pull his horse out of the pack but the horse took off with him and ended up on the outer sand track. Dolce Vino came through the gap along the rails inside the final two furlongs and won on tight reins from Best Time who covered good ground in the homestretch. Dolce Vino has struck good form and a repeat win is on cards. The upper division of the race was won by Lads Gladiator with a start to finish dash, with the fancied Colonel Duff finishing a well beaten third. Rumour Proof who was in the money was sixth in a cluster finish. You’re Wonderful ran on to finish second despite the trip being sharp for him.

Anna and Bugati were strongly fancied to win the 1100 metres Tippu Sultan Cup. Bugatti, who had been twice withdrawn from the fray because of her tantrums at the gate, went in this time without causing much problem. Elite Land led the field with Anna racing on the inside behind the front runner while Bugati moved up swiftly, cramped the inside horse and quickly took charge on turning for home. Bugati broke into a good lead and this lead held her in good stead as Anna covered lot of ground despite running green but missed the berth by a whisker.

Imran Chisty, who lost on Anna and Sirono in tight finishes, was however successful earlier in the day on Gunpowder who won the nine furlong race for horses in the lowest class with aggressive front running effort. Powergrid was a long way behind in the second spot.

Topkapi was widely expected to win the 1600 metres Manjri Stud Plate but Dhariwal trained Camelot who surged ahead at the final turn held on resolutely to win from the favourite. Flaming Lamborgini, who brought the field into the homestretch, ran on to finish third, four lengths adrift of the battling duo.
