Moonlight Romance looks good for Fillies Classic

Cooji Katrak trained Moonlight Romance has the class to win the Gr 1 Fillies Trial Stakes, the first classic of the season, to be held on Sunday. The daughter of China Visit has already served notice of her classic potential by her tremendous win over a mile in the Gr 3 Forbes Breeders’ Fillies Championship at Mumbai. The striking acceleration that the Usha Stud Farm produce displayed was reminiscent of her Derby winning dam Wandering Star. Moonlight Romance has had the benefit of a mock race. Interestingly for a horse belonging to trainer Katrak who is known to train his horses hard, Moonlight Romance has not been subjected to aggressive preparation. She has had light workouts right through her sojourn in Bangalore. This may be the dissuading factor for many to support Moonlight Romance with strong conviction.

Having said that Moonlight Romance goes into the classic with imposing credentials, one has to give healthy respect to the other contestants. Unfortunately Ganapathy trained Awarding who would have gone into this race as a favourite, broke down last Sunday after a gallop this has robbed the race of an exciting contestant. However, the race has attracted a big field and many of them are equal caliber. There performance here will give a clue to the shape of things to come in the monsoon classics. Pesi Shroff trained Sunset Boulevard went down tamely in the Karnataka Million but on that occasion, the filly ran too freely for comfort and tired out in the end. With the benefit of a race run, she should do well especially as there will be a number of horses in the race who will ensure that the race is a strongly run one. The got abroad filly came to Bangalore with high expectations but her copybook was blotted by her last effort. Sunset Boulevard is blessed with the qualities of a good sprinter and if she settled well and extends her brilliance up to a mile, she can be a live threat to Moonlight Romance.

One more outstation horse which has impressed the discerning is Vittal Deshmukh trained Vijay Damini who goes into the race with the disadvantage of not having had a good preparatory run. The got abroad filly, who is the daughter of Elusive City, showed out in a mock race in the company of superior class horses. The mile long trip should not inconvenience her a great deal. Even if she were to fall short of expectations, she has a bright future ahead of her back home in Hyderabad

Among the local contenders, the two daughters of Burden of Proof, Eagle Claws and Siachen stand out. Eagle Claws held off the threat of the latter in a seven furlong race in her last outing and has reportedly improved tremendously. There is no doubt that Eagle Claws has lot of ability, one has to wait and see how this Prithviraj trainee will translate promise with a classic winning performance. Eagle Claws is showing out in the workouts and the underfoot conditions which will have cut in the ground should suit her fine.

Siachen has blazed the track since her runner up effort behind Eagle Claws. On the last occasion, Siachen was conceding one kg to her adversary. Siachen’s last gallop was outstanding and if the same brilliance is extended to the race track, she could be the one to upset. The Kunigal Stud Farm produce has been entered in the fray as a final entry and she carries the weight of expectations of the connections.

Jaggy Dhariwal’s Couleur Rouge has been rated very highly. The filly, who has won twice in succession, is another produce of the Kunigal Stud Farm who is expected to run a mighty race. She has been maintaining her form and fitness and her connections are optimistic of her fine show in the first classic of the season.

Eloise, who recorded an impressive win in her last outing, gave an indication that she has plenty of potential. The run in the Fillies Classic will indicate which way her career graph will go.
