Siachen does Kunigal Stud Farm proud

Jaggy Dhariwal trained Siachen produced an electrifying burst of speed and sealed the fate of the Gr 1 Fillies Trial Stakes, the first classic of the season well before favourite Moonlight Romance could squeeze her way along the rails. Though Moonlight Romance closed with a rush, the lead established by Siachen was too much to bridge. Eloise also finished on impressively ending up third. Sunset Boulevard, who would have gone into the race as a fancied runner, was withdrawn at the declaration stage on veterinary grounds as she was reported to be in season and had attendant problems. Jockey Srinath rode a perfect race and gave Siachen an unhindered run and contributed significantly in the victory of the second favourite.

Moonlight Romance was not subjected to any hard preparation which was quite unusual for a horse coming from the stables of Cooji Katrak who is known to train his horses hard. Possibly Moonlight Romance had some problems to overcome before she was targeted for the fillies classic. She had showed out in a mock race but looked light at the paddock parade. Siachen who had gone down narrowly last time out Eagle Claws had subsequently shown amazing improvement and had an outstanding gallop to her credit. This perhaps explains why the odds shortened on her from a higher quote close to race time. Eagle Claws was the third best supported horse in the race.

La Clique was the assigned pace setter for the race with Vijay Damini, Make My Day racing in the front bunch followed by Couleur Rouge, Eagle Claws, Siachen, Eloise and Moonlight Romance in close proximity in mid group, with Royal Surprise unable to pace with the horses and running a tailed off last. Rounding the final turn, La Clique weakened and Eagle Claws showed up along with Couleur Rouge. Imran Chisty preferred to wait with Moonlight Romance and elected to come the shortest way home while Srinath on Siachen put the daughter of Burden of Proof into top gear on the widest, with Eloise chasing her shadow. Moonlight Romance was baulked for an opening and Chisty saw a wall of horses in front but luckily for him, a gap materialized along the rails inside the final 250 metres. The daughter of China Visit showed swift speed to take the gap and come into the fray. However, Siachen had broken into a decisive lead by the time Moonlight Romance got going and held on comfortably to win from Moonlight Romance. Eloise was third. Couleur Rouge ran on to finish fourth ahead of Xisca and Eagle Claws. The winner clocked a slow time of one minute 42.29 grounds which was understandable given the soft underfoot conditions. The progeny of Burden of Proof have always proved that they have an edge over the rest when it comes to handling the cut in the ground and Siachen’s victory was in keeping with this trend though her victory was well merited.

Moonlight Romance will surely come on a lot after this race. With the benefit of this race run, she is bound to be a front liner for the Kingfisher Derby if only because she is sure to relish the extended trip. Siachen’s improvement from now is of critical importance as to her prospects in the Derby. Jaggy Dhariwal is always known to get the best out of his wards and this veteran trainer has won every big race in the country.

Irfan Ghatala trained Bhagirathi slammed the opposition in the Sans Craintes Plate, a six furlong race for horses rated 60 to 85. The race incidentally is named after the stud farm where she was born. Bhagirathi had narrowly beaten Cruising in her last run and it was widely expected that this time out, with the difference in weights, the latter would make amends. As such, Cruising was backed with great conviction. Jockey Babulal Paswan, who has struck a great partnership with the daughter of Mudeer, raced the five-year old mare behind pacesetter Romance In The Air and pushed the second favourite to take charge inside the final quarter mile. Bhagirathi went sailing clear and won by a widening margin of four lengths from the late rallying The Spartan and Cruising who was flat footed. Bhagirathi is in rousing form and should maintain her winning ways. The Spartan is slowly running into desired fitness level to make a mark.

Laxman Singh trained Kohinoor Wish recorded a facile win in the Justice P Medappa Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Kohinoor Wish, who had run a noteworthy third to Eagle Claws in his last essay, was allowed to run at lucrative odds as Sky Train and The Leader came in for stronger support. The Leader showed plenty of speed to lead the way but had no answer to the finishing burst of Kohinoor Wish who recorded a decisive win to ensure a rare one-two for Hyderabad horses. Sky Train, who came wide and galloped in snatches, ran on to finish third ahead of Love Conquers All.

Pesi Shroff’s Hillary was backed as if her defeat was out of question and the runaway win recorded by the daughter of China Visit in the His Majesty Plate (Div I) was in keeping with this confidence of the connections. Hilary proved infinitely superior to the field. After Star Experience and Senor Speedy brought the field into view, Hilary steadily bridged the gap and went away from the battling duo inside the final furlong to win by seven lengths. Sun Control ran as a cramped favourite in the lower division of the race. The daughter of Ontario took time to warm up even as Secret Vision threatened to runaway with the race. Secret Vision however weakened in the closing stages of the race and Sun Control gathered momentum in the final stages of the race to win with a great deal of comfort in the end. Spark of Sapphire beat Secret Vision to the second spot.

Citrali from trainer Puttanna’s yard built on her promising run by beating the field in the Ich Dien Plate with great deal of comfort. Supremacy was backed spiritedly to win but the favourite had no answer to the speed displayed by the winner who came through the shortest way and picked steam in a trice. Supremacy was a well beaten second ahead of Elite Land.

Sweet Caroline was the betting rage in the 1100 metres Galilee Plate but the daughter of Burden of Proof was not up to recording a repeat win. Abnoba cruised home for a facile win over Missoni. Sweet Caroline was not at the busy end.

In the day’s other action, the tail-swishing Inspired Move reached the safety of the winning post before Mister Trooper could threaten her foray in the front with a late bid.

Senior Stipendiary Steward Mahendran has always been known to be an impetuous person. Mahendran is unrelenting and his actions have often proved to be detrimental. Becket and Change of Luck were supposed to have a mock race as lead up for the forthcoming graded races but the Senior Stipe refused to give a seven furlong mock race for these horses. Instead, he wanted these classic horses to run with a mediocre bunch over six furlongs. The trainer was forced to withdrawn these horses as it served no purpose by running these classic winners which are rated over 100 with horses which are loitering at the lower end. Mock races are meant to serve a purpose. Though one hates to be unfair to officials who seem to think that they are doing their job in the best possible way, one cannot help bringing in the name of the famous character in Charles Dickens’s novel namely Thomas Grandgrind who was a headmaster in Dickens’s novel Hard Times. His name is now used generically to refer to someone who is hard and only concerned with his own wisdom at the expense of common sense.
