Flaming Lamborgini maintains winning form

Satish Narredu trained Flaming Lamborgini built on his last win to get the measure of favorite Captivating in the 1400 metres J B Mallaradhya Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of Saturday’s races. Captivating led all the way but weakened in sight of the winning post as she was ring rusty, this being her first run in the season. On sheer weight of his last win, Flaming Lamborgini should have gone into the race as a fancied runner but Captivating got that privilege by virtue of her imposing record as a juvenile and also the fact that she had run behind Sprint Star in her last start in the North India Derby. However, the quote of 10 to 1 on Flaming Lamborgini was indeed a surprise.

Captivating was taken on a start to finish mission by jockey Sampson. The daughter of Burden of Proof was cruising all along but inside the final 100 metres, the lack of a race run was telling on her fitness as she was slackening. Flaming Lamborgini moved with a flourish to surge ahead in the final stages of the race, in the hands of jockey Suraj Narredu who had a rewarding day booting home four winners, the other successful mounts being Bugatti, Sunspirit and Duke of Edinburgh, all of them firm favorites. Tomsk rallied from behind to finish third. Duke of Edinburgh clocked a smart time of one minute 25.13 seconds.

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Lush Lashes proved too good in the Nawab Sultan Ali Khan Memorial Plate (Div I). The daughter of Don Micheletto had run an impressive second behind Native Talent in her last outing and that run was suggestive of an imminent win. She lived up to that expectation despite jockey John riding with an injured hand. Lush Lashes tracked The Last Samurai into the straight before John pushed Lush Lashes to take charge. The favorite quickened nicely to win comfortably from Royal Player.

John had sustained an injury while guiding Spark of Harmony to victory in the opening race of the day where Sky Rider who was backed to the exclusion of the rest had no answer to the speed displayed by the winner. John rode with a painful hand in the third race and after guiding Lush Lashes to victory, was declared medically unfit to ride. At the end of the last race, he was seen in a sling though one could not perform if he had suffered any hairline fracture on his hand. For the record, Spark of Harmony went on a successful start to finish mission and won without coming under any pressure.

Duke of Edinburgh looked a cut above the rest in the Nawab Sultan Ali Khan Memorial Cup (Div II). The progeny of Greensmith had his share of problems early on in his career but once he has been sorted out, he has been on a winning streak and in the form that he is in, should complete a hat-trick. Suraj Narredu let A Run To Remember to do the front running till the homestretch before asking the favorite to quicken. Duke of Edinburgh stretched away from the field with great deal of ease to win from Saddle Queen and late finishing Southern King.

Irfan Ghatala’s Sunspirit who was withdrawn from the fray reportedly due to the trainer’s assistance nibbling the horse, was the most impressive winner of the day, swamping the opposition in the D N Hosali Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Sunspirit left the field standing inside the final 300 metres to win without being extended in a good time of one minute 26.09 seconds from Agent Archie. Dance N Celebrate who was backed down spiritedly, suffered a bad interference at the start and thereafter she was under pressure and finished a tame fourth.

Sun Dawn was a strong contender for the Manitou Trophy especially since Royal Surprise, the ante post favorite had been a big let down after the hype built on her debut run. The only question mark was about the fear of Sun Dawn losing too much ground at the start as he had been a lethargic starter all along. Though he was sluggish at the start, he covered ground steadily and came up with a rattle with a furlong out to edge past the front running Kings Admiral to record an impressive win.

Jaggy Dhariwal’s Bugatti had settled down after being very aggressive while being loaded into the gates earlier in the season. Her last win had indicated that with the aid of blinkers, she was concentrating on the task on hand. Once again she went into the gates without causing problems and easily beat the challenge of front running Precept.

Nityanand’s Intizara was driven out by jockey Imran Chisty to win from the front running favourite Allegro and the late rushing Inspirator and Legend Reborn in the 1200 metres Chantelle Plate, a race for horses rated 0 top 25.
