Magisterial comes into classic reckoning

Ganapathy trained Magisterial emerged as a strong contender for the Mysore Classics as he made a smooth transition from sprint to a mile within a fortnight while winning the Gr 3 Bangalore Summer Million, the feature event of Sunday’s races. The Summer Million has always served as a pointer to classics in Mysore and judging by the decisive victory recorded by Magisterial, he is destined to go places unless of course physical limitations come in the way.

Magisterial went into the race as a well backed horse but it was surprising to see the strong support received by Saloni ahead of many decent performers. Yas Marina was the pace setter as jockey Imran Khan settled the favorite in the second position, with Aztec Gold in about the fifth position. Salmoni raced in a handy fourth position. Rounding the final turn, Yas Marina went a little wide allowing Aztec Gold to slip through to take charge. Favourite Magisterial was taking his own time to pick up steam and was also lugging in badly. However, inside the final 100 metres, Imran Khan was able to correct the horse and Magisterial got stronger close home to edge past the front running Aztec Gold to win by a shade less than two lengths. Yas Marina ran on to finish third. Andromache who is still a maiden ran a suggestive fourth and her turn to win should come soon at Pune where she will be relocated after this run. Saloni ran down the field. Sun Dancing burst her blood vessels.

Sun Salvador was backed to the exclusion of the rest because most considered his win as a formality. However, jockey Suraj Narredu was unable to drive out the favorite to victory. Md Khan trained top-weighted Inspired Move was guided to a hat-trick of wins by apprentice Zervan. Jockey Suraj Narredu raised an unsuccessful objection against the rider of the winner on grounds which appeared flimsy. He was pretty rude to the Chief Stipendiary Steward who was asking him to provide evidence of interference during the TV replay. The Stewards did not find any merit in the objection and it was thrown out in quick time. Jockey Suraj Narredu incurred the wrath of the Stewards for his improper behvaiour and he was handed out a month’s suspension during which time he is not allowed to ride to work as well. He was also fined Rs 10,000 for giving misleading evidence. Suraj should learn that when he is in front of authorities, he needs to make his point in a polite way especially when the entire racing fraternity all over India is watching the proceeding which is telecast live. Politeness is not expensive.

Chintz built on her good forward run as she led from the start to win the Poonawalla Stud Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 60 to 85. There was inspired support for Star Assembly but he flopped badly. Tanzanite and Cruising were well supported but the latter who was poorly positioned right through the race and as such, her late rally was bound to prove futile. Cruising managed to neck out Tanzanite for the runner up berth. Rashid Byramji trained Incredible bounced back to top form when blasting the opponents in the lower division of the race. Captain’s Lover was a street behind second. Classical Dancer was third.

Padmanabhan trained Kirtling showed amazing improvement when beating favorite Elite Land with a start to finish dash in the 1100 metres Squanderer Trophy, a race for maiden three year olds. The got abroad filly showed great speed to lead all the way and held off the threat from the favorite. A Shooting Star was a faraway third.

Ganapathy’s Noble Breeze proved too good for the opposition in the 1200 metres Allied Forces plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Noble Breeze swiftly moved from the outside draw to take charge of the proceedings within the first furlong and then skipped away from the rest to win decisively. Amazer who came in for sustained support, was a long way second. Favourite Amazing Queen was in distress and finished down the field. The lower division of the race also went the way of Ganapathy trainee Grand Topaz who left the field standing in the homestretch to win from African Sky who was lethargic at the start.

Puttanna trained Kalyan who came in for spirited support, duly obliged in the Batu Gantong Plate, a race for lowest rated horses. M P Mahaesh trained Foresight could have won but the horse ran into traffic jam on two occasions in the straight. Her finishing burst was indicative of the possibilities for this one eyed filly.
